Ed--
This was moving, and interesting to read years after its penning. Clearly, Epinions was a different place "back then" and even before the date of your posting this, but having joined in late 2002, I'll never taste those particular highs and lows. Of course, since my tenure (or 'stay' is probably a less pompous word...), there have been different highs and lows on the site. Still, apparently a lot of Greats have left the building. Most notably, and poignantly in light of his comment below, Sordid-1 is gone, apparently for good.
Despite obvious differences, this piece reminds me a lot of my own non-farewell/I'm only slowing down, folks essay:
http://www.epinions.com/content_3508707460
Lastly, I for one (and I know I speak for many) am very glad you stuck around, and that you continue making your contribution.

Letting go a little bit? I think a lot! (Reply to this comment)
by grey002
I respect your choice, but..... I will miss reading your past opinions, now removed, that I had referred back to, here and there. Your current submissions are down to 3 choices now. That was a new one for me, but, I absorbed it, change is change! I will miss your thoughts on numerous books that you chose. But, If you do strike a whim , I look forward to future interpretations on your newest reads. Maybe?? Take Care- Grey :)

I must not have been looking when you cut this loose... I didn't find out 'til today (from a Stephen_Murray review) that you'd gutted the Epinions database by removing your reviews.
What a loss.
Also, what an act of commitment.
I surely hope you'll be able to stick around. I for one (or, more likely, 1001) would certainly miss you.

ROTFLMAO!!! (Reply to this comment)
by Thorbjore
I saw on the home page today that you were the featured reviewer du jour (actually of those ten minutes?) and both of the reviews I clicked on were deleted. And hence I find the explanation here. Nice one! The joke was on them.
And do stick around, Ed. You are definitely loved around here. :)

Your Material Will Be Missed (Reply to this comment)
by DAnneC
Ed:
For my part, I think your material was a vital ingredient in the mix that makes this site relevant. Speaking as a heterosexual (and long-married) grandmother, I regarded your contributions as both educational to the community at large (here I'm talking about much more than just Epinions.com) and nurturing. They were tools for pulling down the walls of prejudice against gays and lesbians.
My children learned early in life that many of the people their loved and respected were either gay or lesbian. They were taught that their lifestyles were neither "unnatural" nor an abomination before God. Of course, it's all well and good to offer such lessons to our children, but (as with other forms of prejudice) the real victory comes when such lessons are unnecessary. In my opinion, your reviews helped pave the way for making these lessons unnecessary. It's my hope that you will consider returning them to the site so that others may continue to learn and to understand.
Regards,
DAnneC

those that have written before have said it all Ed. Very nice to still have the occasional bit of "Grover" to challenge your thought processes on Epinions from time to time.
I just feel a bit "homeless", these days, bombing from site to site to catch up with my favourite writers.

You "felt" Accepted Because You Belong (Reply to this comment)
by LEDOMAINE
...and you always will. You, my dear friend, Ed ARE a great writer. Every review I read of yours, I could all but envision myself "there"! Every one of them.
You'd better not leave and stay gone for long. But, no matter, I know how to email you, and I know where to find you.
Thanks for the years, for being on my WOT, and for having me on your WOT. Great friends never say goodbye. So perish the thought you'll ever lose ME. I'm not THAT easy ;)
Take care, and a very happy and safe Thanksgiving holiday!

...and bow to your eloquent and emotional essay. I'll be seeing you here, and I'll be seeing you there, but just not as much as in the past in either site. It's not a reflection on others who choose to remain active -- far from it. It's just part of the ongoing evolution of life and time.
cheers, and Godspeed.

Ed,
I’m glad you will be sticking around, even in a limited capacity. I think it should be obvious that Epinions, the entity, does not deserve you (or most of the people here), but this site has evolved (or devolved, depending on your viewpoint) into something else. Part town hall, part community center, it’s a place where people of all different outlooks and backgrounds have a voice, a gathering place, a way to find common ground. I feel some loss when the ones that I like decide to pack it in (which has been happening far too often), so from that selfish standpoint, I’m glad you are not making a permanent exit.

I'm still mulling it over (Reply to this comment)
by jrk
and haven't yet made a definite decision regarding staying/leaving, writing/not writing for Epinions, or retaining/deleting reviews. But I think reading this editorial helped me with at least one of those decisions.
The numerous kicks in the teeth Epinions has delivered to us do make it hard, if not downright impossible, to sustain a relationship with the site. In real life, I favor escape from damaging relationships, so to voluntarily subject myself to an abusive spouse (Epinions) in cyberlife is highly distasteful. But perhaps I should just consider Epinions the loathsome in-law rather than spouse. That in-law gave birth to all those here with whom I do have wonderful relationships, and no matter how obnoxious the parent site may be, I hate to lose the writers here who matter to me.
At this point, I could give a rat's patootie about helping Epinions maintain a useful database, but personal selfishness makes me lament the disappearance from that database of all those fine reviews by you and others that have brought me such entertainment and insight. I'm glad to hear you're not totally disappearing, and I respect your decision to delete your reviews. But how sad it is for all of us that your reviews are gone!
Oddly enough, your editorial helped me come to the decision not to delete my reviews. I realize now just how much I'll miss having access to all the wonderful reviews you and others I respect have contributed to the site. So I guess I'll be leaving my reviews up, not for Epinions, but for those few people who just might appreciate what I wrote.
I hope to see more writing from you, if not here, then elsewhere, so don't go disappearing completely, okay?

being a bit web-challenged (Reply to this comment)
by LRGuis
I assumed I was hitting the wrong button when searching for a new ed_grover review to read or an oldie to re-read. There were only two on my list! Dumb-luck, thinks I, blessed with fast fingers on the keyboard but no skills at navigating the web properly. Sigh.
Then this farewell speech, or fair thee well speech, sheds light on the lack of reviews rather than my lack of skill (not that the skill has somehow returned).
I am glad it's not a complete resignation and I do hope like any good addict you'll return more often than you currently plan. This quite hetero stay at home mom would miss your contributions.

You're a fine writer... (Reply to this comment)
by prettyinpink
...a dear colleague, but more than this, a great soul. Thanks for all your contributions to the Epinions community and to my own confidence.
My own contribution here has stopped, although I didn't plan it that way. Now that I find myself with some energy and interest to write again, I find this site disintegrating. I suppose that is the way the proverbial cookie crumbles.
I do hope you leave clues as to your whereabouts. I enjoy your writing, and I am inspired by your choice of directions.
Many blessings,

Please Visit Often (Reply to this comment)
by lorirobe
I would like to take the time to tell you that your passion shows in your writing. You are a thoughtful person who can educate and entertain with your writing. However, I see that many disappointments have accompanied your stay here.
I am extremely impressed that your opinon received recognition from the "anti aging organization". That must be quite an honor.
It's a shame that this was not recognized by the people who provide this forum.
I intend to look up your former reviews and to read more of your writing. I haven't done so yet, but fear that there won't be much to read.
I am really touched by your words.
God Bless...

but I'm dismayed that you deleted all your pre-Nov. reviews. I'm reading a book (Last Call at Kimser's) I first heard about from your epinion of it, and am frustrated I won't be able to reread it after finishing the book. And I especially want the Firbank pair back.

Don't you dare ever leaving us like that: deleting all reviews and sneaking away like it doesn't matter. I remember back then in March you encouraged me and I thankful for everything you've done, including Gay Pride W/O you invited me to. This place is nothing without you, Shannon and other people who scared us a couple of weeks ago by intention to send everything to hell and walk away.
I'm glad you're staying, happy even. Your reviews make a huge difference for a lot of people. Being part of GLBT community on Bolt.com [IRL goes without saying], I know that most of the guys there appreciate your articles. Several times when I was asked what's the best gay books to read, I was going through your reviews. Deleting them would be like stabbing millions of people. Thank you for what you're doing.

Jeez, what would EPS be without ED GROVER???
It goes without saying that I hope you never leave for good. Two (more or less) reviews a month is a pace that works for me; I never understood how you one-a-dayers found either the time or the inspiration for all that reviewing.
