HomeKids & FamilyLocks & GuardsWhat Should I Know About Adoption?

My real parents

Nov 15 '01

The Bottom Line The real parents are the ones who care for you, punish you, and love you no matter what!

Recently I had an accident and had to go to the ER. Of course there is a lot of questions to answer, some of which invovle family history. For me this is very easy to answer, I was adopted, so my family history doesn't count.

The ER doctor must have read this because as he was treating me he asked when I found out I was adopted. I told he that when I was 7 and in second grade my teacher asked who in the class was adopted and I didn't know. I went home and asked what that was.

My mother being my mother burst into tears and called my father. I remember thinking that there must be something wrong with me. Thank goodness for my calm collected dad. He came home and said " being adopted means that of all the babies in the world we got to choose you."

The doctor asked if that was enough. It was more then enough. Sure like most kids I wanted to know who I looked like but a picture was all I wanted. I knew that wasn't going to happen so I just forgot about it.

Growing up and looking at pictures you see a family of dark haired, olive completioned, dark eyed people and then me, very fair with light hair and blue eyes. As my dad would say later I always had a way of standing out in everything.

Later in my life, when I was having my daughter, a thought happened on me that I should know something about my family health history. I knew my mothers name and where I was born so my OBGYN looked into getting my family health record. At that time the biological parents had release a health records, which meant my biological parents could have contacted me. I choose to pass. Health is something that can't be predicted even knowing family history.

I went through all this with the ER doctor. He was glad I did. I hope this has been some help. My last input is this. I'm a parent now, I know I made the right choices long ago, being a parent has very little to do with giving birth, that is the easy part!
