Internet Explorer 6 - 6 Times the Bugs
Nov 15 '01
The Bottom Line Internet Explorer 6 will give both you and your computer a massive headache!
I spend quite a bit of time online, so I am always looking for new and improved browsers. I am fortunate enough to be connected to a T1 server so my computer is always internet ready. A few times a month a little windows prompt pops up that alerts me to critical updates available at the Microsoft website. You download these updates to keep your computer up to date. A while back I noticed the newest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, 6.0, was available.
Figuring I couldn't go wrong by updating my browser software, I chose to download 6.0 along with my other critical updates. What followed was quite close to a computer nightmare. Everything went fine at first, but slowly several bugs began to rear their ugly heads.
The first thing that really annoyed me about IE 6.0 was that it would constantly crash. You know how it goes, your surfing along, checking out your favorite sites when you get that "Program has caused an Illegal Operation and will be shut down" message that you just want to rip out of the monitor and stomp into the ground. This is one of the most annoying things that can happen while you are surfing the web. The problem with IE 6 is that it happens almost every 10 minutes. I nearly had an aneurysm trying to send a few emails.
After ripping my hair out over the problems I was experiencing I encountered another fun little bug. IE 6 seems to enjoy opening pop up windows on your desktop at a rate of about 2 every 20 minutes or so. You will only experience this if you have a constant Internet connection, so if you are still running on a dial in modem then I doubt you will have much of a problem with this bug. What I found even more irritating was that after I "un-installed" IE 6, the pop ups kept coming. I was at wits end, so I finally deleted the entire IE directory off my computer. This fixed the problem.
After experiencing all these problems I was desperate to get IE 5.5 back. Here I encountered another Microsoft headache. Windows keeps a log of your updates and when I tried to go back and download IE 5.5 I was told that I had a newer version installed and that I could not download the files to revert to the older browser version. I was fairly ticked because I thought I had "un-installed" the newer version.
Finally I had enough so I went back and downloaded Netscape Communicator 6. So far I haven't experienced any problems at all with Netscape and the security features along with everything else on this browser are excellent. If you have IE 5.5 and you are thinking about getting 6.0 DON'T!! Either wait till Microsoft works the bugs out or check out Netscape 6. Don't fall into the same computer nightmare as I did!
