| jordango's Full Review: Sennheiser Electronic PX200 Headphone PX200 Collap... |
I love my iPod, so much that I'm now on my second one, my entire family has one each, and we are all happy in our iPod cocoons. The only thing I don't like about my iPod is those crappy earbud headphones. They don't sound good, they're uncomfortable, and I don't like wearing them. Plus, that "mug me white" color that they're in tells everyone that I'm wearing an iPod when I'm in public.
I tried some other earbuds from Sony and hated those too. They sounded better, but they were very uncomfortable.
Enter the Sennheiser PX 200 Headphones, which I stumbled upon when I was looking for a good, cost effective pair of headphones a few years ago. I'm glad I found them.
The Basics
The Sennheiser PX 200 Headphones are small, comfortable and fold up. They are also "closed," which means that people around you won't hear the music you are listening to and you won't hear them very much, either.
They offer a deep rich bass, nice highs and a good midrange. They sound MUCH better than the iPod earbuds and, at about $45 street price, are a bargain. You could spend up to $150 or more on a pair of similar headphones.
One caveat - these headphones need to be "broken in," which means that they take a few hours before they reach optimum sound. In fact, I've noticed that the sound has gotten better and better in the two years that I've owned them.
There are three headphones in this series from Sennheiser - the PX 100, which offers similar sound in a more open environment and costs about $10 less and the PX 250, which features noise cancelling and costs about $50 more than the PX 200.
Positives
There are lots of postives about the Sennheiser PX 200 Headphones. The most important is great sound, with great bass, excellent highs and a nice midrange. There's also something about putting the sound on your ears - you'll hear a lot more things in the music than you would just listening through speakers. Sometimes I think I hear someone talking to me in the background, but then I realize it's some background vocals I never noticed before.
That said, these headphones are also isolating, making them nice to wear on an airplane, as you'll hear the music and less of the jet noise. They're not totally isolating, however. You'll still hear some outside noise.
The headphones are also very comfortable, with padding on the earphones and the head piece. They only weigh a few ounces, but after several hours, however, I can get fatigued and have to take them off.
They also take up very little room. They fold up nicely and fit in my briefcase, taking up very little space. They come with a handy case to put them in, but I've long since missplaced it.
They make my iPod sound great, a big improvement over the earbuds that they iPod comes with.
Last but not least, they are a great value. I got lucky and found them when the price was a little lower than it is now. I paid about $33 for them online. Now, the best price I've seen is about $45, but they are a great value at that price also.
Negatives
There's not much negative to say about these headphones. They are comfortable, affordable, portable, and offer great sound. The only negatives are that they take a long time to break in and you can get fatigued wearing them. Some people have also said that the cord breaks easily on the PX 200, but after two years of regular use, I haven't noticed this.
Conclusion
I wear these headphones generally when I'm working out. As a result, I carefully clean them with a towel after using them. I've seen no problems related to excess sweat on the headphones or the padding.
Also, because they are isolating, the sound is right next to your ears. As with all headphones, be careful not to turn them up too loud. Your ears will thank you.
The Sennheiser PX 200 headphones represent an excellent value. If you are looking to upgrade from earbuds, they are a great choice. I am VERY happy with these, so much so that my entire family will likely each get a pair soon to go with their iPods.
