Take your MP3s anywhere

The Bottom Line

A portable MP3 player is a device for storing and playing MP3s. The idea is for it to be small and, thus, portable. There are several advantages over burning CDs. First is the ability to erase and rewrite. I'm not sure how easy it is and may vary with model, but CD-Rs tend to be permanent and CD-RWs have to be erased entirely before being rewritten. However, considering that most MP3 players have a large storage capacity, I'd think that you can replace one or two songs at a time.

That's the second advantage: hours of storage capacity. CDs can hold 80 minutes at most whereas MP3 players usually hold several times that. This is great if you have diverse interests or want to hold lectures recorded in or transferred to the MP3 format.

Third is portability. Most of the ones I've seen are small enough to fit into a pocket. This is another advantage it holds over CDs. Most portable CD players can't fit in any pocket I know of.

The only disadvantage is cost. Most portable MP3 players, especially the good ones, tend to cost a lot. You'd need a lot of CDs to make it worth it. There is a great deal of novelty involved. I think practicality may win out, though. Given the number of CD wallets I have and still need, I may have to look into an MP3 player.
