This is a continuation of fun garden ideas for you and your kids... PIZZA GARDEN might have all the makings of a delicious homemade pizza, such as tomatoes, onions, peppers, and perhaps even herbs such as basil, oregano, and other appropriate seasonings. SIMPLE SALAD GARDEN You can't go wrong with all the fixins' for a good salad – lettuce, carrots, radishes, celery, arugula, and whatever else you have the space for. CITRUS GARDEN There are so many plants that have a citrus scent or color. Many of them can also be used as herbs, teas, or potpourris. Besides the obvious lemons, limes, grapefruits, and oranges, consider lemon balm, lemon cucumber, lemon grass, lemon verbena, mock orange, lemon myrtle, lemon thyme, lemon basil, lemon mint, lemon catnip, lemon-scented geraniums, and kaffir lime. NOT-QUITE-FOOD GARDEN These are fun, since they are named after food but are not really meant to be eaten! Some ideas include corn cockle, milkweed, candytuft, honey locust, beefsteak plant, grape hyacinth, chocolate vine, marsh mallow, and pineapple lily. Try plants that will spell out your child's name or your family's name. These look especially nice if you have corresponding wooden letters staked in the appropriate places. You can buy cheap wooden letters at a craft store and paint them. Better yet, let your children paint and personalize them. GARDEN OF GIRLS' NAMES Besides the obvious lily, holly, daisy, violet, marigold, and petunia for girls, you can plant fern, ivy, aspen, camellia, ginger, iris, jasmine, laurel, lily, rosemary, willow, or roses with feminine names such as Belinda, Betty, Celina, Catherine, Constance, Gabrielle, Hannah, Kristin, Marie Louise, Penelope, and Tiffany! SO... Squish a bit of mud through your fingers, watch an earthworm, spray each other with the hose, share a juicy tomato... Please, whatever you do, enjoy this time with your kids and look at the world through their eyes. It's really a rather beautiful place!  |
