I agree, melon is a great flavor. They need to start making melon stuff here - like melon Pez and melon Lifesavers. Yum.

And snack-sized freezedried sardines - flavored even? Bleeeccch!

I love those tiny little gumballs, but the best flavor is definitely melon. And the same company makes gummy candies in melon that are amazing. My all time favorite Japanese candy is plain old rice candy. I tried those little jelly cup things once though, and they were revolting. Last time I was stocking up on Japanese candy I noticed a bag of "flavored" freeze dried sardines. They came in a large bag and inside were divided up into snack-size servings. Yechhh... and right there amidst all that tasty candy too.

Don't touch my moustache! (do itashimashiette)

I like those little jelly things in the cup but haven't been able to find any of those suckers anywhere since they were banned -- it seems they're too much like corks in little kids' throats!

And for those wasabi peas - I am so there with you on that. Wasabi peas and kakipeas. Oh man.

How was Hawaii?

Thanks again.

Now there’s some things I really do need to know about Japanese cuisine.

I’ve never had the courage to try any of the marshmallow type treats, but judging from the response in this comment section I’m really missing out. I agree that Pretz are an addictive, savory alternative to Pocky, and “salad” is quite beer-friendly, but name-wise I like “roast” the best. Speaking of beer-friendly food stuffs, nothing goes with a super bitter IPA like a handful of Kasugai Jumbo Wasabi Green Peas. I eat that stuff by the pound. I keep telling my bartender that setting out bowls of wasabi peas would sell a lot more beer than the stale Mr. Salty’s he sets out now.

Have you ever tried any of the little cups of flavored jelly? The Japanese market I usually go to has bags and bags of the stuff in all kinds of flavors. I’d get some, but it seems like if it was really any good they wouldn’t have so much of it. Next time I go maybe I’ll break down and get a bag and post a review.

The world thanks you for informing consumers about the finest snack foods on earth. Onaka ga suite imasu!

Hell, I can't remember what I had for dinner tonight, much less any comment I made to you regarding an Eep fridge review sans jalapenos. In any case, I apologize.

Still, I had to laugh when you wrote: "It took me a good 15 minutes to figure out that 'Stuffed Japs' was jalapenos." The truth is, in the deep south (especially in Jesse Helms' ultra-red neck of the woods) it means exactly what it says!

And as for our beloved kboo, she is still in the basement, and I hope she comes back soon.

Thank you, monkey. As for food stuff, I bow down to kboo and mr.eyore. Have you seen the former around lately?

And - I know you know the difference between japanosnacks and jalapenos. Anyone who signs off hasta la ______ siempre' has to know jalapenos. I was referring to a comment you made, about my fridge eep lacking jalapenos, and about how I am working on one jalapeno of a review. This is not that review. I'm still working on it. It comes complete with pictorials.

Speaking of jalapenos and Japanese snacks... when I first moved to the US, I was at this jock bar studying the little placard advertising appetizers. It took me a good 15 minutes to figure out that 'Stuffed Japs' was jalapenos.

OK - there's a Vietnamese bakery a few blocks from work - I'm going to try and find those little suckers...

Jalapenos, indeed. (Reply to this comment)
by Fez_Monkey
You know, writing a review of Japanese snacks and not including senbei is a sin in itself. Omitting those aromatic crunchies is simply not right, as none of this new generation of Japanosnacks comes even close to staying power and beer-compatability.

And those Pocky things ... I still can't get into them.

Otherwise, you continue to validate your editorial status in the culinary realm by bringing enlightenment to the pastier and more "wonder bread" element of Eep.

PS: As you know, I am well aware of the difference between jalapenos and Japanese food. I did grow up on the west side of LA, after all ... not Pig's Knuckle, Kentucky.

Nope-- these are actually about 1" square, with some kind of green jello dotted with coconut, which surrounds an almost grainy mung-bean center. They're actually made by one of the Vietnamese bakeries in the Bay Area.

I haven't seen them in Oakland, but you can find them at the International Market in Union City (Dyer and Alvarado-Niles). I should have stopped by there last week, when I took a little field trip out to Union City. Sigh...

MMMMM. Chocoballs are pretty darn good!

Yeah, I hear you on waxy chocolate. Japanese chocolate only seems to be good when it's covering something else up.

I love Chocoballs, the ones with the little brown bird guy on the package, (although most japanese chocolate tastes waxy to me). And have you ever tried Corn Pretz? it's buttery and corn flavored. yum.

Wait, you aren't talking about those round jelly things, are you? I thought those things were banned because they were choking kids.

Still though - I love mung bean.

and bring it with me, next time I pop into one of the Vietnamese markets in my neighborhood... I've always wondered what all of those snacks tasted like, but I usually end up buying those little green jello things filled with mung bean paste that come in the cellophane wrappings on one of those small styrofoam meat trays...

Rock on,

I have to say Pocky and Pretz (especially the Salad one!) are the best!

Thanks for the good review (cripper escapes to the nearest convenience store to steal all the Pocky and Pretz they have).

P.S. Just to comment on beer with salad Pretz, beer Pretz here in Hong Kong!
