What are your needs?

Nov 21 '01

The Bottom Line Just looking for a planner? Buy a palm. If you have other needs, look at a Windows CE or Psion. It all depends on what you need (or want).

What PDA should you buy? It really all depends on what your needs are. Let me explain:
I am a PDA fanatic. My first device was an old, cheap electronic organizer that kept my appointments, addresses, etc. It, of course, did not have all the bells and the whistles, and really didn't amount to much. Then came the Palm! After little need for convincing, I purchased a Palm IIIxe when it first came out and have been using it for years now. I have enjoyed the mass amounts of freeware apps out there and the ease of using the Palm OS. I have tried using several other devices, but none can be used the same way that I have utilized my palm. I now own a Psion Revo Plus (Epoc OS), a Cassiopeia (Windows CE), and my trusty IIIxe. Below I have listed the advantages and disadvantages of each Operating System. I personally use the Palm and the Psion both now. Although I have some great Windows CE games, the Casio just didn't fit my needs.

WINDOWS CE: If you have the money, and want a lot of windows functionality on a PDA, go for Windows CE. You have Word and Excel at your fingertips, which is a definite plus. I do own the Casio, but wouldn't use it as my primary PDA, because I don't have the money to buy all the third party apps I would need to make it function like my Palm IIIxe. Really, if I wanted Windows CE and had the money, I would personally purchase a Compaq IPaq. I believe that it is the best Windows CE device on the market right now.
advantages- familiar windows OS, great color options out there, better video/audio capabilities, amazing games and third party software, better internal memory options
disadvantages- cost, not a lot of good freeware, uses more battery power

PALM OS: If you are just looking for a solid planner, with a lot of freeware apps, buy a palm. For most users, I would recommend Palm, because it is more user friendly, and cheaper than any other device. (Unless of course you are looking at the new top of the line palms)
advantages- cheap, reliable, easy to use, best time management programs in the market, tons and tons and tons of freeware programs, games are getting better and better, best planning desktop conduit
disadvantages- poor video/audio capabilities, poor color in color palms

PSION with EPOC OS: I have to say that this is by far my favorite OS out there. It is somewhat like Windows, but I believe that the Word and Sheet programs are better than Windows CE version of Word and Excel. On top of that, you have a keyboard built in. I use my Psion Revo Plus instead of a laptop. It has all the functionality I need for a laptop, and fits in my pocket.
advantages- Great word and sheet (excel) programs that easily sync with Microsoft desktop programs, very stable, cheap (you can find a Diamond Mako for around $100, Diamond Mako is the same device as Revo Plus), built in keyboard,
disadvantages- because this is primarily a European device it is hard to find a lot of freeware apps, no color screen, no back light on the Revo plus
