The Bottom Line If there is a more perfect spot in this world, I certainly can't imagine where it is!
While I've recently moved away from the DC metro area, I spent a good year of my life fighting those late-night hunger pains at the office. Where is the best place to fight those pains? Easily Bob and Edith's diner in Arlington. Great place to head after a late night of work on the Hill, a great night of drinking and dancing or just a late night of boredom! Greasy food, friendly but individual staff and the greatest bottomless cup of coffee you'll ever taste. There's nothing better at 3am! I've tried everything on the menu, and my personal favorite is the cheeseburger and fries. Greasy and well cooked, with all of the fixins, please. The fish sandwich is always perfect too, as is just about anything else on the menu. And if it's not the way you like it, they'll correct it for you, no problem. Acceptable Attire: Anything and everything! On any given night you'll see men in tuxedos sitting next to a guy in jeans and a t-shirt who is sitting next to a woman in a leather mini skirt and a tube top, who is next to a goth fresh out of Nocturnia. Anything goes here, because people are coming in from work at the same time people are coming in from parties and clubbing. Price: Cheap, cheap, cheap. $1.10 for the best coffee you'll ever drink, and cheap pies, ice cream, and "real food". They can keep their costs down because they're always busy, especially from 11:00pm to 5:00am. Seating: Most of the time, you can stay seated for as long as you want to. B&E's is a great hangout to sit and chat and smoke... unless they're swamped and there is a line. Then it's eat and move it on out. But this is rarely the case, and mostly only an issue after the bars close on Friday and Saturday. Those nights, plan on a wait in line to get a table. But be patient! It's well worth the wait. Service: Become a regular at B&Es, and it won't take the staff long to learn your name and your typical order. They're great, frazzled people so be nice to them and tip them well!  |
