The Bottom Line The horror movies you were too busy to rent, the ones sitting dust-covered on the shelf waiting to be seen may not be Oscar potential, but they will entertain!

Do you remember the first time you walked into a video rental store? Do you remember the whole wall of horror titles that you had never heard of? Do you remember going row by row renting them all, one by one, until you had seen all of them? In the last case, probably not. But being in middle school at the time, a great weekend getaway was to go to the local video store and rent those strange horror movies that didn't get TV publicity or any other media hype. It just seemed so cool to rent a video that I couldn't see in the theater because I wasn't 17 (at the time at least!). All kidding and reminiscing aside, some of them were good for VERY different reasons: many were funny because they were so bad, some were so shocking that they warranted some kind of respect for the gore factor, and some were just plain frightening. Lets go back in time and check out that wall and pick a few flicks that deserve some mention.

10. Texas Chainsaw Massacre II. This sequel to the movie of the same name featured some hilarious moments and conversations between "Bubba" (the guy with the chainsaw) and his brother with the plate in his head. Just witnessing the little brother using a coathanger to itch the skin around his cranial plate is worth the price of the rental alone.

9. 2,000 Maniacs. This film revolves around a once-every-hundred-years Southern Uprising that consists of some angry Rebels luring some unsuspecting Yankees into their little provincial town and systematically torturing them to death. The various methods of execution employed within make this movie hard to forget, and worth mentioning: the band "10,000 Maniacs" gets its name from this movie (5 members in the band times 2,000 maniacs equals 10,000 maniacs...are you following me?). Yes, you are and be afraid. Be very afraid.

8. Microwave Massacre. This movie deals with a man who murders his wife in a demented haze. With no other logical course of action, he uses the microwave and some utensils to serve her up piece by piece and consumes her bit by bit. Must I go on?

7. Day of the Dead. Wow. This is not a "feel good" movie. It leaves you exhausted and dazed. Not for the faint-hearted. The gore here is extreme.

6. Re-Animator. Quite possibly one of the most shocking love scenes ever produced on film reside within the spinning hubs of this classic. Overall the film is not spectacular, just plain shocking.

5. When Hell Comes To Frog Town. Roddy Piper's best work in my opinion. This movie is so over-the-top ridiculous, it is actually fun to watch! Make popcorn and invite the in-laws over for this knee-slapping adventure.

4. Death Race 2000. David Carridine stars in this odd sci-fi movie with a horror twist: imagine a race where you score points for running over pedestrians (and yes points differ for old ladies, men and women, and baby carriages). Oddly enough, Sylvester Stallone gets the nod for Best Supporting Actor in a B Movie Rental. Just kidding, on the award part (yes, he IS in it!!! [snicker]).

3. From Beyond. This is another wierd sci-fi horror movie that has an inescapable mix of gore, eroticism, and horror. Lovecraft fans rejoice.

2. Exorcist III. Sure, everyone has seen or heard about the first movie, the second one was terrible, and no one can ever recall the third one. Bottom line? one of the scariest movies I'd hate to see twice. Truly terrifying.

1. Evil Dead 2. A must see! A classic film of genius and daring! 5 stars! One of my favorite movies in any category, this movie is one to watch with a group of friends where you can turn down the lights and really get into it (ssshhhhhh! no talking! the woodshed part is coming up!). With memorable lines and scenes aplenty, this is the King of the Hill when it comes to really obscure horror movies.

If you haven't seen these movies and are interested, they may be hard to find. I hope you enjoy and if you like any of them, please drop me an email telling me so!

Thanks for reading!
