Great sound, but prepare to power.

Pros:Great sound, very durable.
Cons:A bit expensive and power hungry
The Bottom Line: Great sound and durability, but be prepared to pay for it. Oh, and have an extra amplifier handy too.

I got lucky and snagged my RM9s of of ebay for $210. Even at this lower than retail price, the Bostons are very pricey. I however, don't mind paying the price for great sound, and I figured that these would be about the best 6x9s I could buy.

When I got them it took me all day to put them in, but that was because of my install, not the speakers. I put them in exactly the same place as the stock 6x9s. At first I had them running off of a JVC head-unit only. They might've been getting about 15-20 watts a channel or so. In this situation, at least to my ears, the Bostons didn't seem to outperform even the stock speakers. I really was amazed. I just paid over two hundred dollars for a pair of 6x9s only to be let down. I rationalized to myself that it must be because my JVC just wasn't giving them enough power.

I rationalized that way for about a week, until I put in a Precision Power amplifier to give them some juice. They got about 100 watts this time, and it showed. They sounded a lot better with that much power. I think I could've given them twice as much and not phased them a bit. There were a few times where I found myself actually wondering if I would need a subwoofer for my low end. These speakers certainly know how to get deep from time to time. To be honest however, I was only kidding myself. While they do get deep, they'll never be able to do what a subwoofer does. Of course, they aren't designed to either.

The sound quality is very good. After they got the power they deserved I was relieved to discover that they were, indeed, the best set of 6x9s I'd ever heard. I began to notice things in songs that I hadn't before. The high end isn't 'tinny', and the midbass isn't 'weak'. It seems just right.

My biggest complaint is that, while they are the best 6x9s I've ever heard, they probably aren't worth $299... or even $210. I don't see why we need to pay as much for a 6x9 as we would a good component set. I guess it's for all those audiophiles out there who want 'premium' fill in the back of their cars. For that... it works quite well. If you just want to get some good 6x9s to replace the stock speakers... save your money. The difference between these and a different set of aftermarket 6x9s isn't going to be staggering... at least not as much as the difference in price.
