The Bottom Line Taken together, these songs are good ones to listen to after or during a breakup.
Earlier I compiled a list of great love songs that could be played at any time when you were with the one you love. Today we are going to look at some songs that focus on the other side of romance: the breakup and the aftermath. When romance goes bad, the hurt person turns to music. And the person must pick the right music to help them cope. So here are the songs that can help them through the pain of a breakup. 1: I'm Looking Through You-The Beatles: This gem from "Rubber Soul" is one that could be dedicated to a loved one who turned out to have been leading you on, much like the "Christina" I was once in love with ("I'm looking through you/Where did you go/I thought I knew you/What did I know? /You don't look different/But you have changed/I'm looking through you/You're not the same"). 2: Alison-Elvis Costello: Costello's first song among many that would become a music standard, is a look back at a passed romance. What makes the song emotionally striking especially is the way Costello handles the verses and chorus, sounding seriously saddened on the chorus ("I know this world is killing you"), but letting some anger show on the verses (" I only wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say"). 3: Train In Vain-The Clash: In the case where the loved one left you, this pop song by those revolutionary rockers sums up the feeling quite well. So alone I keep the wolves at bay But there's only one thing I can say You didn't stand by me Not at all You didn't stand by me No way 4: With Or Without You-U2: In an era of plastic sappy love songs, U2 delivered one that spoke about fading love and looked at it from both sides. Sleight of hand and twist of fate On a bed of nails she makes me wait And I wait for you Through the storm we reach the shore You give it all but I want more And I wait without you With or without you I can't live With or without you And you give yourself away 5: Don't Go-Pearl Jam: This song may not be about a loved one leaving. But there's no denying that it can sum up those feelings quite well. Play it loud. Please don't go out on me Don't go on me now I know I took you for granted Never acted up before Don't go on me now. Please don't go on me 6: Heartbreaker-Led Zeppelin: For the moment when the significant other has been mistreating you one time too many. This one works well as Robert Plant howls the following lyric over Jimmy Page's furious electric blues riff. Abused my love a thousand times However hard I try Heartbreaker, your time has come Can't take your evil ways Go away heartbreaker! 7: That's No Way To Say Goodbye-Leonard Cohen: Not one of Cohen's best-known songs, this is one of his most emotionally affecting. Cohen sings the lyrics over a simple acoustic guitar backing. As he sings the title line, title female backup singers with angelic voices join in, giving the song emotional resonance. 8: About A Girl (Unplugged)-Nirvana: The one that I put on here is the one from the "Unplugged In New York" album. The one features Cobain singing over a simple acoustic backing about how he "needs an easy friend/One with an ear to lend". But also reminds her that "I can't see you every night/For free". From what I read somewhere, Cobain wrote the song for a former girlfriend who did not understand that relationships are a two-way street. A beautiful song either way. 9: Heart-Shaped Box-Nirvana: On the other side of the Nirvana coin, here is a loud angry rocker from the In Utero album. The song begins with Cobain singing the lines: "She eyes me like a Pisces when I awake/I’ve been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks". The opening line reminds me of a girl I was in love with in high school who was a Pisces. Then on the chorus, Kurt lets out a raging fury Hey! Wait! I've got a new complaint Forever in debt to your priceless advice 10: Something I Can Never Have-Nine Inch Nails: This dark ballad from Pretty Hate Machine is one of the best expressions of lost love that I have ever heard. Reznor begins by softly singing: "I still recall the taste of your tears/Echoing your voice just like the ringing in my ears/My favorite dreams of you still wash ashore/Scraping through my head/Til I don't wanna sleep/Anymore". 11: Love Will Tear Us Apart-Joy Division: Avoid any of the remakes; the original is the best one. It features an appropriately ominous background that matches the lyrics. And the final lyrics of the final verse sum up the song perfectly. You cry out in your sleep, all my failings expose There's a taste in my mouth, as desperation takes hold Just that something so good, just can't function no more When love, love will tear us apart again. 12: Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses-U2: The boys from Dublin make their second appearance on this compilation with this dark song from Achtung Baby. The lyrics are perfect for capping off an album devoted to failing love. You're an accident Waiting to happen You're apiece of glass Left there on the beach When you tell me things I know you're not supposed to When you leave me just out of reach Taken together, these songs are good ones to listen to after or during a breakup. |
