| Gadget_Guy's Full Review: Motorola Talkabout T900 2-Way Pager (Black) |
General:
The Motorola T900 is my 5th Motorola Paging product, however it is my first 2 way device. I purchased it from WebLink Wireless for $99 with a one-year contract.
Features:
The main feature of this device is sending and receiving messages, that is about it. It does have an address book, mainly for making message sending quicker. It has no other PDA-like features. If you are looking for a more PDA like pager, look at the more expensive timeport or the RIM. This pager performs it purpose well. Message are easy to type, as long as your fingers are not overly wide. I have pretty large hands and have no trouble using the small keyboard. The address book makes it extremely easy to select an address for your message. The Unit offers the usual assortment of alert sounds, including vibrate. Most service providers will give free news headlines and weather reports which i do get, but rarely look at.
Durability:
The device is pretty solid, the flip up screen could maybe be improved with a firmer spring but it is fine as is. The one design flaw i have noticed is in the belt clip. I usually clip the pager on my pocket, with the device in my pocket and the clip pointing outward. But, when the device is clipped onto a belt, with the device pointing outward, it tends to get knocked out. I have been walking quickly up stairs a few times and knocked it out of the clip. This is not a big problem, but a tighter clip might be useful. The unit itself has survived fine, i have dropped it a few times and it shows no scars.
What can you use this for?:
This is a question i asked myself many times before buying this. I knew I would buy it anyway, because i like gadgets. But, in reality there are a number of uses for it. Of course, if your friends or family also have T900's you can communicate between them. But it also functions as a regular email device. My parents are very very busy most of the time, and I find this a good way to get in touch with them, rather then try to get the on the phone.
Also, with services like Yahoo Mobile, or AOL Mail Alerts, you can have customized information and email alerts send to your pager. I am notified on mine when i receive an email on my AOL account.
Coverage:
One very important step is to check coverage areas. Make a little list of all the ZIP codes you are in on a regular basis. Then, you can check coverage in those areas using the providers website.
Battery Life:
The battery life is fine despite what some people say. It only uses 1 AA every few weeks, hardly a large investment. It the device also features an battery indicator that tells the exact % of battery remaining
Recommended:
