| HJS33's Full Review: Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Daily Sanitizing Spra... |
Ever since I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis last year, my awareness of anyone and anything that could be passing germs my way has been heightened significantly. The medication I am on has left me with a very compromised immune system, and I seem to get sick all the time, so when I heard that I would get to test this product, I was psyched. Any protection I can get from spreading bacteria is a good thing in my book.
The Product
Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Daily Sanitizing Spray comes in a 22 oz light blue trigger spray bottle. I was surprised at how large it is (and how heavy), and was even more surprised to find that the literature that came with the product mentioned that it retailed at under $3 a bottle. That is a lot of spray for a low price. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a place that actually has the product priced at under $3. Most places I have seen have it retailing for closer to $3.50, and some even have it over $4 (highest price so far is $4.49).
Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface Daily Sanitizing Spray is a spray sanitizer meant to kill 99.9% of bacteria on hard non-porous surfaces. Sounds a bit like Lysol, etc. right? According to the product manufacturers claims, and from what I can tell, the difference with this product is that it does not leave any harmful residue on the surface it cleans. You can just spray it and leave it without worrying about whether your kids and/or pets will get poisoned. You can also wipe it off of whatever you spray, but you need to leave the product on there for at least two minutes before wiping it off. Also, this product is not a cleaner, just a sanitizer, so if you have a soiled area, you will need to clean it first.
They even go so far as to claim that the product is as gentle as water. The gentle as water claim and the statement
no harmful residues, there's no need to rinse after you spray. You can just spray and go. seem a bit far fetched to me, especially when they are recommending that you spray a childs pacifier and/or a pets water dish, among other things. I was not too fond of these recommended uses. The product smells like watered down bleach, which is not a bad smell, but I do not feel too comfortable just spraying my cats water dish with it, leaving it to dry and then filling the dish with water so the cats can drink out of it without wiping the dish down first. Regardless of how low an amount of the active ingredient is (.0095% sodium hypochlorite (bleach)), I just cannot see how this could be safe for my pets, especially in the long run. And, I looked on Clorox.com and found this: Clorox® Anywhere Hard Surface spray should not be ingested, but it is gentle enough to be used on food-contact surfaces without rinsing or wiping after spraying. That leads me to believe that perhaps the amount of bleach is just low enough that it wont be harmful if you ingest it in small quantities, but I just do not want to take the risk that me, my friends and family and/or cats might get just a bit too much of it in our systems, especially those of us with virtually no immune system. That statement just sent out red flags all over the place, and should I use it on something like my cats water bowl, you bet I will be wiping it down.
On the positive side, the spray does claim to kill 99.9% of the common bacteria (such as E Coli, Salmonella, Streptococcus (Strep) and Staphylococcus aureus (Staph)) found in your home. That I like. Granted, a lot of these bacteria can be kept at bay with a good house cleaning, but it is nice to know that you can just spray around the home should someone in your house get sick, or someone who is ill visits, without the need to clean your whole home again. It does seem to be a whole lot quicker. But, I love my Lysol, which can do a lot of the same things as this product, and it kills more than just bacteria.
Also, I have been using a bleach/water solution for quite some time now to clean my massage table, and I do not really see the difference between this product and that one other than the one the manufacturer mentions in the literature I received. Apparently, a home solution is not stable and can lose its effectiveness in around 24 hours, but Cloroxs product is stable for up to a year, because they have stabilized it by balancing the pH. Always with the pros and cons
my solution is much cheaper to make. I would just have to make it more often, but that could be a pain in the bum. This is where the Clorox product could be a benefit.

It is nice that they have such a large list of suggested uses, but I am still hesitant to use it on anything I or any pets or other people would actually eat off of or with. Here is the list which was found on Clorox.com:

Final Thoughts
I like the idea of using this product when I want to just quickly sanitize some areas, such as doorknobs and the inside of garbage cans. I would not use it on some of the things that the manufacturer recommended, like anywhere I know my cats will directly be eating or drinking from or on something that I would eat off of (like plates). It just does not ring safe to me. I liked that the scent is not as strong as Lysol and that the product seems to be a bit safer to use around babies and pets.
Thank you to Fleishman Hillard, who gave me a free sample of this product in exchange for my honest opinion. As always, I enjoyed testing it out!
Thanks to all who read/rate.
