Pros: The pretty nun
Cons: Mugging, useless visuals, insulting lenghty lead-ins to unfunny visual punchlines.
The Bottom Line: Even if you like Jack Black or Napolean Dynamite, you'll be disappointed.

| travelmess's Full Review: Nacho Libre |
We love Jack Black but this is just terrible. Maybe he was trying to be serious because of "religious" content, but even that lent no redeeming quality to it. So even if farting sounds make you laugh -- there's a time and a place for everything I guess, but when it's too often for no real reason, it becomes dumb. Then, you have to love WWE Wrestling. My son and I do, but my wife thinks it's stupid. Setting that aside, there's too much time spent with Jack mugging the camera for no apparent reason except to exercise his eyebrows. Then there's too much time spent exploiting his physique, which is less than attractive and simply unfunny. There are also threads that simply go no place and his love interest simply disappears during much of the middle of the film. Even the "special effects" are bad -- in one unmemorable scene "Nacho" attempts to hit someone w/ a cello, and it breaks up so badly it is clearly fake. And then it ends abruptly with virtually no resolution of even major themes. There's a sequence where he goes off into the "wilderness" which turns out to be right next to the village -- but until you see that visual punchline you are beaten over the head with "I'm going into the wilderness" or similar...like you wouldn't get the laugh. So in addition to being stupid, it's insulting. Oh. And "Pedro" from Napoleon Dynamite shows up in one minor sequence, where he too simply mugs the camera. Which is what made us wonder--Dynamite is an amazing film -- the humor is to be honest subtle and there are several "mugging" scenes, so how could something by the same director be so bad and so unfunny in so many ways for so long. The only redeeming feature is Nacho's love interest, a beautiful young nun, but where the relationship is going is never explained. If there's a sequel...I will wait for it to hit DVD or HBO at best. And I doubt even HBO will run it.
