STOP THE VIOLENCE!!!
Nov 27 '01
The Bottom Line It's sad and tragic that things like this have to happen...
I know this is a late review, but after pondering about the events on September 11, I feel I have to help somehow. If you do not enjoy reading rants, please do not read any further.
I think that no one can deny that the World Trade Center bombing on September 11 shocked the world. I say shocked, because some people were shocked yet happy (i.e. the Palestinians, the Taleban) that the event took place, while others were shocked and saddened (i.e. the rest of the world) that an event like this had to take place.
As one person far away from New York, it is hard to do anything to help. I wish I could go to New York and help find victims of the attack or perhaps give blood or give all the money I have to the families who lost members of their families during the bombing. But as much as I wanted to help in anyway, Hong Kong people did not attempt to create some kind of fund, let alone give a helping hand to the victims and I, as one person, could not do anything to help (as much as I regret not helping!).
However, if I was to help in one way, there is one simple thing we can all do. STOP BEING VIOLENT!
This may sound a bit childish, but quite frankly, there is TOO much violence in this world. Let me repeat that.
TOO MUCH VIOLENCE!!
The solution, of course, would be to stop it, but this may be a bit too far-fetched. However, it is something that we should try to implement in our lives, and more importantly, something parents need to instil into their children at an early age.
However, society does not function in this way. At this current point in time, children kill each other, men murder their wives, children shoot their parents with guns and the power of our minds have created something that can wipe out everyone in the planet. We could be killed at any day because of one of these weapons.
Can you imagine being killed during a nuclear war? I don't want to think about it, but at the current rate we're going, we might end up being part of a nuclear war and might die because of it.
How is such violence caused?
There are many reasons.
As mentioned earlier, one reason could be due to the fact that parents might not believe that violence is wrong or that parents have not told their children that violence is wrong. If a parent does not teach a child this, he might think it is reasonable to kill a person for, let's say, accidentally crashes his/her car into a car that seriously injured a family member. Society cannot work like this, or else we'll become anarchists, and I do not want to live in anarchy.
Another reason could be due to the exposure of violence around the world right now. Within the last century, we've endured two World Wars along with other major/minor wars, school murders (i.e. the Dunblane Massacre, the Columbine shootings), terrorist attacks (i.e. Abu Sayyaf holding innocent people hostage along with killing them). The list goes on.
And why is that?
Violence is everywhere, therefore acts of violence have been steadily increasing, along with the number of deaths because of the violence around us.
I'm not saying completely stop violence either. Violence can be justified in some situations, but most of the time, it is excessive and is unnecessary. For example (and no offence to any of you guys out there), the U.S. attacks on Afghanistan are a bit excessive, and the bombings in Afghanistan have led up to many deaths as well and instead of looking like "heroes", Bush and his government have made themselves look just as bad as the Taleban or whoever was responsible for the September 11 incident (I say this, because no one is still quite sure who did it, although it probably is the Taleban).
WHEW! If you've read this far, I hope you've managed to withstand this unstructured rant! But to "help locally", I think we need to make sure that parents teach their children not to be violent, so that they won't repeat the same mistakes people in the last generation made.
Thanks for reading the review.
