The Bottom Line Go see it, talk to Ronan, he's possibly the coolest guy on the planet, and dance your @r$e off
I saw VNV Nation again on Monday, November 26, 2001, at the Riviera club in Atlanta on their Futureperfect tour. Named after their upcoming album, this is their first large, headlining North American tour, with opener Icon of Coil. The show featured two background screens, as opposed to the one last year, allowing for everyone to see at least one. A monologue in English, German, and French of "This is your world, these are your people," and some other phrase accompanied by historical pictures replaced last tour's air raid siren. Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson then took the stage to roaring applause, and went into "Kingdom," followed by a new song, "Epicenter," which was the hardest of the new material played. Another new song followed, "Carbon," with environmental statistics and images of smokestacks in the background. "Honour" was next, followed by another highly popular song, "Darkangel," to which Ronan joked, "I want to hear the guys singing along, it's not just for girls to sing to." Another new song, "Fearless," was next, followed by a "Distant," and then another new song. The main set ended with "Solitary," the band's anthem. VNV returned to the stage for an encore to more noise, and started with a remix of "Legion." "Standing" was next. The band then took a short break, and returned with another new song, "Holding On," followed by an older song they didn't play last time in Atlanta, "Joy." The third encore followed, with Ronan joking about, "Sebastian from Icon of Coil is tempting me right now with a bottle of Jack. Put it down Sebastian!" as the bottle of whiskey was held up. This encore featured "Further," and Ronan had a tear to his eye by the end of the song. The last track of the night was another new one, "Beloved." A few months ago, Ronan wrote about the influence of the art movement Futurism on the new record. Last time I saw them, I liked that the images on the screens were Futurist-esque. They are even more so now, especially for the tracks "Fearless" and "Epicenter." The music was mainly triggered by Mark Jackson, "The Engine of VNV," as Ronan said. The sound quality was great, but the volume wasn't loud enough. My ears weren't ringing afterwards any, at all. Ronan sounded a little too emotional on "Joy," but I just love the cold vocal delivery on the album so much. This is the 2nd best concert I've been to, especially taking into consideration the openers. My only complaint was the guy goth-dancing in front of me, moving side-to side, so sometimes he'd be in my line of sight and way, sometimes not. My other complaint is the Riviera is not the best place for a concert. The stage is small, it had to be extended, and the layout goes from side to side, not back to front. Still, the quality of talent that plays there usually makes up for this. Anyway, go see VNV Nation for some great dance-industrial future-pop. And talk to Ronan as he's always up for a conversation. Mark is, too. |
