The Bottom Line If you have an audio collection from the Internet, but don't have a CD Rewriter; then you might want to consider a portable MP3 player.
If you are one of the many people who can¡¦t really decide on choosing a mobile MP3 player, then here¡¦s my advice that can make shopping a mobile MP3 player a breeze. What to look for when shopping for a mobile MP3 player? When looking for a mobile MP3 player, I do suggest at least a total 64MB of onboard and/or removable memory. With 64MB of memory, you can store up to 120 minutes of audio in one unit. There are some units that offer expandable memory by flash memory cards or similar products that can help expand your MP3 player for even more music playback. But there are some MP3 players out there that only have fixed memory and can¡¦t be expanded in anyway. If you¡¦re looking for even more space for your MP3 player, then you could go for something like a portable MP3 CD player like the Rio Volt and TDK Mojo. They store about 10 times the audio of most 64MB MP3 players in terms of time. This is if you¡¦re not concerned with the size and have a CD Rewriter. But if you¡¦re looking for even more memory, yet not concerned about the size of the unit; by all means go for an MP3 jukebox such as the Creative Nomad Jukebox, where they can store hours and hours of music, because they use a hard disk to store audio. With the connecting interfaces, I strongly recommend a USB connection. USB enables us to upload data quickly from the computer to the audio player. With MP3 CD players, they¡¦re the only ones that don¡¦t require connections, but it does require a CD Rewriter in exchange for a connector in many cases. For the control panel, it should be simple yet logical. What I mean is that the player should have a controller that could at least control the player within your command. It should include play, previous track, next track, stop and so forth. Batteries For the batteries, it¡¦s advisable to invest in an alkaline battery unit. This is because with alkaline batteries, they¡¦re readily replaceable and when your power supply dies out in the middle of your road trip, you don¡¦t have to worry about a power outlet to recharge your MP3 player. In addition, for the alkaline batteries; they¡¦re much cheaper to replace than the rechargeable batteries, since the rechargeable batteries may require a special order from the manufacturer. But the nice thing with rechargeable batteries, you don¡¦t have to replace the batteries once in a while under average use. But if you¡¦re a heavy user, then you have to constantly wait for the battery to fully recharge once the battery is empty. Sound and Extras Many people have a misconception about the sound output quality. It seems that most MP3 players can support at least 64kbs of sound. This is where the ideal sound that would support with the WMA audio formats, which is a more compressed form of MP3 audio format. With brands like Sony, RCA and Rio, buyers can expect excellent results out of those players. With the portable MP3 audio players, you do want to look for a unit that includes, a battery, earphones or headphones, manual and tutorial booklets. But many will offer extras such as a cigarette lighter adapter, AC adapter (standard for rechargeable units), audio cassette adapter for the car and carry case for your player, an interface connector (preferably USB) and storage for extra memory. With the expandable memory units, they will also offer memory not just from the manufacturer (unless it¡¦s a trademark memory such as Panasonic¡¦s Secure Digital), but many will accept Compact Flash memory that is designed for digital cameras, unless the maufacturer requires a special trademark memory. Whatever you¡¦re going to buy, I do recommend the players that can expand in terms of firmware such as memory. But there are some players that offer an FM tuner, to listen to if you decide to enjoy some FM radio. An equalizer is also recommended to actually even enhance your audio experience off your MP3 player. But I wouldn¡¦t recommend spending more than $350 for an MP3 player and it may become obsolete in the near future. Currently I do recommend the Rio 600, Rio 800, Creative Nomad II MG and Creative Nomad II. This is because many of these offer expandable memory and they¡¦re a great value for all users, regardless of how large their MP3 collection is. |
