skinhead is not synonymous with racist,,, (Reply to this comment)

Been reading up on my work, eh?
Hehe.
Quite an impressive list you've put together, but with the amorphous state that music of all genres now lies in, its doubtful you'll ever be able to write a complete listing. But I'll be damned if you didn't try.
Bravissimo et al. If you haven't already, you might want to check out my punk piece to see how to do what you did, but with terrible consequences.

Here's one... (Reply to this comment)

Grebo for one of my favorite set of groups (Wonder Stuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Pop Will Eat Itself)
Intense fast music, with often depressing lyrics, but energetic sound, characterized with heavy guitars, heavy beat, and often, sampled bits from media events and TV.
Great review!

What a great idea to write about. Wish I had thought of it. Keep up the good reviews.

Here's a unique one from my friend Margaret (Reply to this comment)
by Nini23
She calls all the punks that hang out at bars and think they are too cool for any one except themselves,
"Suave Punks"
now you have to say it Swa-Vay Punks because that is how she says it. Pretty funny, Nini23

It's possible that this term was just local. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the "tough guys in track suits" thing didn't go over too well in other parts of the world.

Skinhead is not synonymous with racist.
Amen.
Bonehead is the term used by most skins when referring to a nazi.
Crew - A group of straightedge kids (aka 7 Seconds/Crucial Youth)
Boot Party - A beatdown that mostly involves un-even sides and lots of kicking.
Scene - The group of people/bands that your local punk culture revolves around.
Unity - Creating a strong, tightly knit scene. Unity may sound positive, but often resulted in rivalries (Boston vs. New York, FSU vs. DMS, Providence, Rhode Island vs. Everyone...)
Sneakerboy - An early 90’s development, Hardcore kids adopting hip-hop styles/slang (see Wrecking Crew, Madball, Biohazard...). Reviled by me (and all cool kids) at the time this trend was deserving of all our contempt as it would ultimately lead to bands like Korn and Limp Biz.
Wow, this list brought back a few memories. Funny how much importance some things have for you when you live and breathe it every day. We always wanted to know what somebody was before who. Hammer Skin, Suede Head, Greaser...all the terms I used to use in daily conversation without giving it another thought. Did I really used to judge a person's political affiliation by the color of their shoe laces?
Thanks for the good read.

Re: what about "skate rock"? (Reply to this comment)
by megugrrrl
Skate rock! Oh yeah! I remember the Faction back in high school - geez, that didn't seem so long ago but that was 12 years ago. I've definitely got to add skate rock and crossover to the list. Thanks!
Yeah, you're right - this was really, really fun to do.

what about "skate rock"? (Reply to this comment)
by Joaquin
great list, although heavy on the SKA side of things. (I guess I can read your interests there), but am I showing my age when I suggest using the term "skate rock"?
or howabout "Crossover" in reference to bands that mix a couple of different sounds together? ( mostly punk and metal).
That list must have been fun to make.
