PUMP IT UP: When you apply your new tan, it's helpful to have a few additional little luxuries in the way of tools. You'll need only three. 1. Pump dispenser. Paula's Choice offers an optional pump-top which makes the whole process much more convenient. Nothing wrong with the common squeezable flip-top but the pump is nice to keep you in your flow. 2. Flock sponge. Particularly for the face, a flock sponge is a nice little addition to aid in blending. I lost mine and have had no problem simply applying the gel with my fingers but the sponge ensures a smooth and even application with no effort at all. So if you tend to be a spazz (yours truly), get the sponge. Fringe benefit: when you use the sponge, you don't need to mussy up your nice clean palms. 3. Back paddle. Applying sunless tanner to your back could be a semi-impossibility without a good, long back paddle. A sponge on a plastic popsicle stick is what we're talking here. A boyfriend will do in a pinch but they're more cumbersome and not as easy to control. STEP BY STEP: 1. Shower before application but make it brief and not too hot. 2. Exfoliate with a mild body scrub or scrubby mittens. (It's a good idea to exfoliate daily.) 3. DO NOT SHAVE! If you break this rule, tanner may collect in your pores, giving your skin a speckly appearance. 4. Dry yourself off with a towel. 5. Apply moisturizer. My secret weapon is baby oil. Wherever your skin is ultra-dry, the tanner can accumulate and that's a dead giveaway that your healthy glow is self-induced. So rub in the baby oil and then wipe your skin down with a nice thick towel to get off the excess. Dab a little moisturizer on any super-dry parts and blend it in real good. Just don't go too crazy or the tanning gel won't adhere as well. 6. Apply the tanner to the tops of your hands first. Then apply it evenly to the rest of your body. I begin in the place which would normally be darkest and then blend out from there. Be careful of putting on too much. You'll only want to put on as much as can be smoothed into the skin and absorbed. If there's any tanner pooling on the surface, you will get a darker area there. Blend, blend, blend it in well. If there are any areas which would normally not get as much sun, don't apply the tanner directly to those areas. I will put tanner in an adjacent area and just blend it over a bit to the "less tanned" areas, like the sides of your feet. 7. Wash your hands, especially your palms and around your fingernails. If you find you've washed all the tanner off the tops of your hands, you can apply just a hint later with the flock sponge. Be careful not to let it accumulate in the creases of your fingers. 8. Wait an hour before getting dressed since the tanner may stain. Practice makes perfect! Take some time to check out the various products. If one doesn't work for you, don't give up. There are many sunless-tanners on the market with a wide variety of colors and consistencies. Good luck and enjoy your sun-kissed look! |
