I am always on the look out for a new product that disinfects and leaves surfaces clean and sanitary. I love cleaning (well, not really) but if I have to clean I like the house smelling like I cleaned and the scent giving evidence that Ive actually cleaned. So, when offered the opportunity to try out a new Clorox product I was happy to do so.
The new product is called, Clorox Anywhere which is a Hard Surface Sanitizing Spray. It is a product that, according to the manufacturer, kills 99.9% of bacteria (salmonella choleraesuis, staphylococcus aureus, klebsiella pneumoniae, streptococcus pneumoniae, proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, and salmonella typhi) on hard, nonporous surfaces.
The concept is really great! This can be sprayed on any hard surface and is safe if the sprayed surface comes in contact with humans or animals and even food. (The box and container does bear the warning to keep away from children but I suppose that would be due to misuse by kids drinking it or spraying it at each other and kids are porous.
Some of the advertised uses include:
For kids: pacifiers, toys, changing tables, high chairs, baby bottles, lunch boxes, and etc.
For pets: pet bowls, play toys, litter boxes, and etc.
For around the house: cleaning boards, counter tops, showers and tubs, doorknobs, sinks, bathrooms, kitchens, and pretty much anywhere you clean and germs can live.
Other Uses: boats, garbage cans, cars, keyboards, windowsills, remote controls, telephones, banisters, kitchen table, knives, stovetops, potty chairs, rattles, etc.
The surfaces that it recommends usage on are: ceramic tile, chrome, corian, Formica, glass, granite, grout, linoleum, marble, metal, plastic,
porcelain, stainless steel, tile, vinyl and wood.
My mind automatically went to where I could use this at school to help cut down on bacteria and germs that are daily hazards for my students and me. There I could use it to spray down pencils that I loan out, desks, doorknobs, and even the small refrigerator that I share with a team mate.
The spray comes in a light blue spray bottle with an attached nozzle. It contains 22 fl oz of spray. A real negative about this container is that theres no nozzle adjustment. You lift the small square cap and spray. The stream is steady and the surface is really wet when youre done no matter how neatly you try to aim it. It really needs a light spray option instead of just this steady wet stream of liquid. The directions tell you to spray and leave standing for two minutes and then if desired to wipe up with a paper towel or rag. There is no, if desired about it. You will need to wipe it up because (I experimented) if you dont it will stay wet for a really long time due to the spray amount. This eliminated possible uses for me. I cant just mist the pencils (for example) and let them dry; Id need to spray and then wipe them dry and hope that the towel I was using didnt have any of the bacteria on it or Id be right back where I started. It works okay in the tub, sink, and shower areas because I just let it air dry there but other surfaces can sometimes be problematic.
One thing that many people might like is that there is little odor to the product. Theres just a faint whiff of Clorox while spraying but no residual odor. This doesnt meet my need for things to smell clean after cleaning but is a positive when using on many areas like baby items.
The price is good. For a 22 ounce bottle of spray, the suggested retail price is $2.99. I do think that because of the amount of liquid used with each spray that this would be a weekly grocery item (if you use it often and everywhere).
What I like about this product
I like the idea of the sanitizer. I like that it can be used on multitudes of surfaces and that it is safe to use around humans and animals. I think that the price is good. I respect products made by Clorox and feel that it is doing all that they advertise it to do. I think that if you have small children, this might be a comfortable support of your efforts to keep things as germless as possible.
What I dont like about this product
I dont like the sprayer. There should be a mist setting so everything doesnt get so wet and stay wet for so long. With a mist, I might find more ways to use it. I understand that with a mist it would set up the possibility of missing some of the area that Im sanitizing but it would be used more often.
I received this product free to review from Fleishman-Hillard in exchange for my honest opinion about it which is stated above and below.
My personal opinion of the product is that it may meet the needs of many, but it wont become a regularly purchased product at my house. I prefer products that clean and disinfect and this one is solely a sanitizer. I dont have babies or children at home and many of the uses are better suited for those that have children or babies. If I had babies, Id still be somewhat reluctant to use products on their items that go directly into their mouths such as pacifiers; although I may feel safe enough to use them on toys. I cant use this on my kitchen table because the table is wood and you need to have it sit on the surface for a few minutes before you wipe it up which causes my table to whiten. With just my husband and myself at home, germs are present but not the kind you get with excretions from mouths and noses that you get with little ones. I will keep this on the shelf for use when we have colds to wipe the telephone and other items that we share. Its a good price but to use it on my ceramic tile floors would require using more than one bottle. Sanitizing just isnt a real issue to me and so I would not find a daily use of this product. Im sure that it does all that it says, but it is a product with one purpose, to sanitize which is not a huge issue or concern to my household. Briefly, I would not recommend this product unless they change the sprayer options; and I personally did not find it useful for me.
