| brianmayo's Full Review: Play Snappy Video Snapshot |
Snappy had been on my mind for months. I picked up the information: the pamplets, the product info at the website, and other resources.
I was wrong. I was wrong to splurge $250 for Snappy Deluxe 3.0. I was wrong to spend the money I sold my Super NES with. I was just... wrong.
Why? Mainly since the only good use for Snappy is a paperweight. Take it from me - I'm a computer geek. I set up my own computer in less than an hour, internet and all. But I was looking for something fast, cheap and simple. 0 out of 3 ain't bad.
FAST
Figuring out the cords was the easy part. Hooking Snappy up to my VCR was simple; a breeze. Setting it up to my computer was another thing. While hooking it up, I noticed it needed an LPT1 (printer) port. I only had one for my printer. So I bought a $20 cable box. But when I installed and used the software, that was another thing.
CHEAP
I bought the Snappy DELUXE 3.0 for $250 at my local computer store (before Circuit City). I came with 3 extra software titles, including one I already had. But that was the only good deal I got out of Snappy: two free software titles. The regular Snappy was $200.
SIMPLE
Heh. This was a pain. Every time I tried to use Snappy, the dreaded "Snappy hardware not found" screen would pop up. I was frusterated. It took my a week to get the thing actually working. Snapping images was easy, but after 10 or so shots, unsaved snaps were deleted. I lost a lot of snaps, and time, due to this bug. I set it to auto-save, and continuous, and I was getting a lot of grabs. I grabbed nearly 300 grabs out of one episode of The Simpsons. I was satisfied on that part.
From those points, don't bother with Snappy. Get WinTV instead. It's better and it has USB support, for easy plug-n-play. But I don't know about Snappy 4.0 though, it might be better. But I'm not taking that risk.
