Zooba Offers Books for a Flat Cost and No Shipping Charges
by Bryan_Carey | Jun 29 '06
I have been a member of many book clubs and I often quit and rejoin the same club over and over again in order to get the lowest overall cost for the greatest number of books. Traditional clubs have treated me well but there is one book club that ...

I've been with Zooba, now rebranded as BOMC2, for about three years, but I'm at the limit where cheap with some nifty features is just not doing it for me. The technology that makes it possible is also what's appealing, but it is failing too often now. I like the queue concept (similar to Netflix), but I can do that on Amazon via leaving books for later. But the real killer is the repeated failure of the once-useful (and by me oft-used) gift address feature for buy-it-now books.

My parents' address had disappeared, and when I recreated it and sent them a couple books, the shipment went to... my billing address. Got no satisfaction from customer service, but a few extra days and book rate at the Post Office got the books where they should have gone in the first place. Now another instance where, having selected a book as a gift, my email again says it is going not to the intended recipient but to my billing address (my default _shipping_ address is a P.O. box, which is where my monthly shipments still, correctly, come). Emails to customer service are repeatedly answered with a lack of comprehension.

Back I go to ol' faithful Amazon. Or Overstock, or BookCloseouts, or wherever AddAll or BooksPrice finds the best deal.

Zooba - limited selection and no returns (Reply to this comment)

Zooba is a book club where a user pays a flat $9.95 fee for all books. A reading list is created and each month the book at the top of your list is mailed to you. You can also buy as many books as you like for the $9.95 price.

Although the price is ok, depending on the book and how long is has been out, it is not always the best price. Also, the slection is not that great and the website functionality does not always make sense. You can choose a book from your reading list to "buy now" but it does not remove it from your list and if you don't go back and do so, they will just send you the same book again. This can be a problem since there are also no returns accepted once you join and keep that first book.

If you are not an avid reader, this could be the club for you. If you read a lot and don't want to wait a while for shipping (slow shipping even if you choose to "buy now") then it may not be the best option.

I Love Zooba! (Reply to this comment)

I have found that if you are shipped a wrong book or a double order (both happened to me), you cannot ship the book back. But they will ship you another selection for free. A bit frustrating if you aren't ready for another shipment.

Great review!
