A couple of years ago I ran the sci fi reading group at my store and in an effort to get more people to come I started asking local authors to discuss their books. In this case it back fired miserably. I spent an hour chatting with Connie and her husband because no one else showed up. But I can see why.
Count Scar is your basic high fantasy novel with knights, a wizard, and a court conspiracy. Galoran is our hero. He was a great knight in the service of the Emperor, but he’s kicked out for some reason I can’t remember, maybe he’s just too old. Anyway, through a stroke of luck he inherits a castle and the title that goes with it. Melchior is the wizard. He didn’t want to be a court wizard, he got stuck with the job. Galoran doesn’t like him; he doesn’t like Galoran. There’s a conspiracy that the two of them must work together to solve, they learn to trust each other. You can see where this is going.
I had a terrible time reading this entire novel, but I had the threat of the author showing up expecting me to have done my home work. Well, I did it and I have the autograph to prove it.
I must say that Connie Bouchard is a very intelligent woman and a demanding teacher. She teaches Medieval history at one of the near by colleges and I know someone who was in her class. She’s tough, but she oozes knowledge. Once we realized no one else was coming I sat with her and her husband and learned more about French Medieval history than I had in 16 years of formal schooling and 8 years of personal study.
Too bad she can’t write fantasy the way she teaches history. Or maybe that’s the problem.
