| FlowrChild's Full Review: Nintendo NES |
Those of you who are fellow Nintendo addicts like me, will sympathize with a condition I call "Nintendo Thumb." Nintendo Thumb can be categorized as a condition caused from endless hours of game playing, where your thumb is swelling and experiencing shooting pain, but you can't put the controller down because, well, that would mean you'd have to stop playing the Nintendo. Rather than torture yourself through taking a break (and doing something productive, blech!), you continue going until your thumb is pretty much ready to fall off. But hey, it's all in good fun, right?
Those of you who are reading this and wondering how many times I have possibly been dropped on my head, obviously haven't owned a Nintendo.
What Is So Great About This Ancient, Out-Dated System Anyway?
It's simple really. It is what video games started off being and what they're really about. I was born in 1981, and I was basically raised on Atari and Commodore 64 computers. I grew up on games like Donkey Kong and Pitfall which are a billion times more fun to me than some of the complicated, fancy shmancy games that are out now. Now, I'm not saying that Playstation doesn't have some great graphics, but the controllers are enough to give me a massive migraine. Now, I like to think of myself as an intelligent person (or kid myself into believing that anyhow), but there is something about a controller requiring you to "Hold down A while pressing the up button twice and tapping B three times lightly while doing a dance" that makes game-playing just a little too complex for my liking. That is one reason I love the Nintendo! It's so simple to use. It has a game pad, start and select buttons, and 2 red "A" and "B" buttons on the side. It's that easy. None of this mind bending stuff.
One of the main reasons I love Nintendo so much, is because it allows me to be nostalgic about my youth while still enjoying the same classic games I played as a kid. I mean, where would video games BE without Mario?!
What Isn't So Great About This System?
The main thing about the NES system that is annoying, is blowing the games and inside the system in order to get it to work. Sometimes it does this irritating pink and gray blinking, where the game screen will not come up, and you are pretty much straining to breathe from blowing all the air out of your lungs. This is one thing I dislike about the Nintendo system, but it is such a small thing compared to all the things I do like.
My Top Five Favorite Nintendo Games
Now, you don't have to listen to me or anything, but if you do decide to get a Nintendo, you have just GOT to try these games that I am recommending.
1) Bubble Bobble-
This is my favorite video game ever! The premise may seem kind of silly or dumb, but you'll be surprised at how enjoyable it is. You're a dinosaur, and your objective is to blow the bad guys into bubbles, pop them, and collect the fruits and goodies that come out of them. The game takes you through 100 levels, and you can have 2 players, which makes it double the fun. Be careful not to take too much time beating each board, because a ghost comes and will chase you down and kill you!
2) Arkanoid-
This game stems from one of the most simple ideas ever, like the game "Pong" we all know and love. You are a little spaceship, and you hit the ball into blocks, which drop multi-colored squares which give you more options (ie lazers, more balls, etc). It seems really easy, but it is very challenging and difficult as the levels go on. Plus it tests your coordination.
3) Tetris-
I don't even think I need to explain this one. If you've never heard of Tetris, I suggest climbing out from under that rock once in a while.
4) Maniac Mansion-
An extremely fun, difficult, and frustrating role playing game. You and three of your friends need to break into a mansion of a mad scientist, and free your friend before she gets experimented on and killed. You have to go through the entire house picking up useful items and not getting caught by the scientist and thrown in the dungeon! I'll admit, I can't seem to get too far in this game because I am stumped on how to beat it, but it just makes me want to play it even more.
5) Super Mario 3-
This game is SO much fun! It is by far the most enjoyable Mario game ever created. Get to the end and save the king on each level by throwing turtle shells at bad guys, eating mushrooms, and blowing on your warp whistle. My favorite things about this game are the raccoon tail which enables you to fly, and the little green sock you jump into and can stomp bad guys with. It is highly addictive and a good way to waste time.
Honorable Mentions:
Paperboy- Get from Monday to Sunday without being killed and delivering papers to all the necessary houses
Lemmings- One of THE MOST FRUSTRATING games I have ever played, but it a great way to challenge yourself. Get the lemmings to work together to get through each board.
Game Shows- In my opinion, Game Shows are the perfect games for playing with friends when they come over. Just don't play them too much without pause, because eventually the boards start to repeat. I recommend Jeopardy, Wheel of fortune, and Classic Concentration.
Final Thoughts
Nintendo is the perfect system for people who like the old-fashioned games and get confused by the more confusing new systems. The graphics and sound are not all that wonderful, but it doesn't phase me at all.
By the way, if you want a Nintendo system and games for cheap, go to www.ebay.com. I bought a Nintendo and 13 games for $70. It doesn't get better than that!
Thanks for reading!
