The Bottom Line Remember children have such short attention spans that you want to make the story interesting in every aspect.Make the story jump right out at them.
Reading is a very important part of todays world. What better way to help a child by starting to read to them while they are inside of you. I read out loud when I was pregnant and I picked kid stories to read. You would be surprised at what a child learns while they are in the womb. Then after my boy was born I continued the habit of reading to him. Even as a newborn. Think of the bonding that goes on in that special time set aside for mother and child. I can think of nothing more rewarding than hearing a child look at me and say come and read to me mom. One of the most important things in reading to a child is making the story come to life. When ever I read I always put emphasis where it is needed. I want my child to see the characters jump out of the book and come to life. What I want to include is the fact that I myself love to read and was taught that from a early age. My mom would not allow us to mark on a book, tear it, or even fold it to mark the page. She also commented that a person can sit right in a chair and never leave the house but go all over the world and learn all different kinds of things. One of the things I did as my son grew and could sit on my lap is as I read I would follow the words with my finger. Therefore giving my son a idea of the marks in the book mean something. Also if he wanted to discuss the picture in the story we would stop and discuss it. We always had great discussions and some of the things he came up to include about the pictures even now make me chuckle. Kids have such wonderful imaginations. In closing I will have to comment that one of the most wonderful things you can do for your child is set a special time aside so you can read to your child and interact with them as the story is read. I have always treasured the time I took to read to my boy. He often brings it up today about remembering the time I took to read with him.  |
