The Bottom Line Hard to understand, lousy tech support options, not good for home users unless they happen to be professional geeks
Eight days ago I purchased and downloaded the $80 McAfee Internet Security 4. 1) Since I have a modem that was a bad idea. The huge download failed twice and did not RESUME where it left off. 2) The install failed because it did not detect its own previous version of Virus Scan (but I did not know this.) I uninstalled but it failed. 3) Customer support: I learned quickly they do not provide ear-to-ear support even for new customers. The choices were either to pay 2.95 a minute plus a long distance call or to sit in the online chat and wait for a technician. I did this - three times - each time waiting for 30 minutes to type with a tech. The session "ended" right about the time the tech was going to give me an answer. Reconnecting each time and REWAITING each time, someone finally sent instructions on deinstalling and forced deinstalling. 4) Their instructions were wrong - not only did they not work but even the directories were wrong. 5) My system was so completely hosed up at this point that I could not even open Control Panel or reboot without an Error from Virus Scan that I bit the bullet and did a complete RELOAD OF MY SYSTEM! 6) Starting with a clean system I reinstalled and configured Internet Security. I hate it. It has slowed my internet access to an unbearable crawl. It is hard to use, hard to understand (unless you are the Geekiest of Geeks). It is not a HOME USER product. The help text only speaks more Geek. It doesn't have a troubleshooter Q&A. I hate it. And, even when you close it - this GUARDDOG thing stays active (Ctrl+Alt+Delete shows it.) 7) So where am I? Deinstalling but wait. THe help text says never to deinstall from Control Panel but to use the Uninstall CPD file from their folders. SURPRISE! That file or option is NOT THERE. SO, I am back online - at this very moment - waiting in the support queue. 8) To return a downloaded product, you have to get a Letter of Destruction and it takes 30 days to get a refund. I hate it. Don't recommend it. |
