The Bottom Line Good for energetic 6 year old boys.
For my son's 6th birthday party, he wanted a football party. We invited just boys (thank goodness, it got a little rough at the end) and asked them in the invitation to wear sports jerseys if they had them. I always plan for these at-home parties to last an hour and a half and that worked out just fine. Each child received a hat I bought for $3 at a craft store with their initials on the back (so that they could go home with the right one. After every game, they received stickers to adorn the hat just like the college teams wear. We planned the following organized games: 1)football throws into a hoop (moving back to get farther and farther away 2)kick the ball thru the goal posts (I got an inflatable goal posts and the ball from Oriental Trading for $5 3)a balloon relay where the boys split into two teams and race each other to a traffic cone and pop the balloons before running back to tag the next runner and 4) hot "Football" - a variation on hot potato and each child "out" received a whistle and got to blow the next kid out. After this we had lunch (hotdogs, pretzels and popcorn) followed by cake, which I made with a regular cake mix and vanilla canned frosting tinted green to look like a field and I bought plastic football players to place on top. The boys barely finished their cake in their efforts to get back outside and "scrimmage". At this age, that means chasing whoever has a ball and dragging him to the ground. Several balls were involved. We did this until the parents arrived to take the boys home. My goody bags were brown paper bags with footballs magic markered onto them. They each received their hats, whistles, a little candy and a $2 football I found at a local drug store. The boys went away happy and with a bit of their natural energy burned off! My son loved it.
