I recently had an experience ordering from GreatBuyUSA so I just thought I'd let everyone know how it went.
It all started when I was browsing the Internet for the Emerson MBR-1 multiband radio. Well, GreatBuyUSA had it for the lowest price I could find. On top of that they had a special offer for a FREE watch with any order over $25. I would have ordered the radio anyway, without the watch offer, but if they're making the offer, I figured why not?
I actually did read the previous Epinion reviews for this company, and while they were all negative, I guess I wasn't too influenced by them because there were only 3 of them and they were written years ago. I also checked the Better Business Bureau which gave GreatBuyUSA a satisfactory rating. So, I convinced myself to take a chance and place my order.
The ordering process was simple enough. You add your items to your cart. It then shows you what you have in your cart and shows how much shipping will be added. I noticed that the shipping for my radio was $4.95, which I thought was reasonable. You then click on "Proceed to Checkout" where you enter your name, address, and credit card info. There's also a box for a Coupon Code. To get the FREE watch, you're supposed the type in the word "TITANIUM" in this coupon code box which is exactly what I did. Then you click the "Submit Order" button at the bottom of the page. Once you click this button, your order is placed. It then shows you your invoice for your total order.
As soon as I clicked the "Submit Order" button and my invoice came up, I had a sick feeling in my stomach. The FREE watch was added to my order, but they charged me $19.95 for it!!! On top of that, the shipping charge added to my order was not the $4.95 that was shown on the screen before I placed my order, it was $6.95!!! Immediately, I sent an e-mail to their customer service to ask them not to charge me for the FREE watch.
The next day, someone did reply back but only to say they would not change my order and to just let the order go through. Then after I receive my order, I should e-mail them back to request a refund. I totally do not understand this logic. Wouldn't it be a lot simpler to not charge me for the FREE watch in the first place?
Be that as it may, I got my order very quickly, within 3 days. The radio I ordered is great, I am very happy with it. But the watch they sent me was not working. I'm assuming it's just a dead battery which is probably why they're giving them away "FREE." I haven't tried to replace the battery yet, so I don't really know.
Needless to say, as soon as I got my order, I e-mailed their customer service again and requested a refund for the watch. This time I did not get a reply e-mail back. A week later, I got a $19.95 refund check from GreatBuyUSA in the mail.
Overall, I guess everything turned out OK in the end. But this was not exactly what I would call a smooth transaction. To their credit, they did ship out my order very quickly and they did resolve the problem. I'm not going to cry about the extra $2 they charged me for shipping or the fact that the watch doesn't work. It's just the extra aggravation of being overcharged and then having to get my money back that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. If you're thinking of ordering from this company, I wouldn't say that you shouldn't, but I would just say don't bother with the FREE watch.
