AC/DC TV/VCR

Dec 10 '01

The Bottom Line An AC/DC TV/VCR combo for use in a van should be chosen based on screen size and portability considerations. Prices for a complete unit are in the $200-$500 range.

Some TV/VCR combos are available with AC or DC power capabilities. What this means to me is that we can use the device in our van or home. There are various devices on the market. Some of them combine a very small screen, such as 4" or 5", in a duffle bag along with a VCR. This type can be carried easily from house to car. However, the screen is so small, I decided to look for a solution with a larger screen. I have found at least two vendors who provide a 9" screen in a console-type unit that also includes a VCR. What I did not like about this solution is the lack of portability. There are certain times that I want to remove things from the van for obvious security reasons, besides the desire to use it in a hotel, for example.

The solution I ended up purchasing was a standard TV/VCR combo, 9" screen, along with a harness/holding system designed to hold this size of TV. The harness system attaches to the two bucket front seats so the screen is easily visible to all passengers in the back seats of the van. The package can be detached from the seats and transported into the house.
