A Year in Review, "2001: An Epinions Odyssey" Write OffDec 16 '01 (Updated Jun 02 '02) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line n/a This submission is part of thevoid99's writeoff, where a bunch of us hoity toity music writers talk about the music we loved and hated, and our colleagues on the site who made coming back here every day to read, rate, and write worth it. One last thing, this thing is LONG as hell. You've been warned. Let's get down to business. Artist of the Year 1)Tool 2)Radiohead 3)Staind 4)System of a Down 5)Ani DiFranco BOTTOM LINE: Tool released the magnum opus, Lateralus, an album so good even the King of Rock hasn't been able to come up with a review yet. Radiohead released the befuddling Amnesiac but made up for it with a sparkling live show. Staind and System of a Down both released albums that changed my entire perception of them as bands, which isn't easy. And Ani crashes through with her wonderful double CD that had plenty of nice little gems. Honorable mentions: U2, Springsteen, Black Crowes, Gorillaz, Dropkick Murphys, Blink 182 (very under-rated album) Album of the Year 1)Toxicity, System of a Down 2)Lateralus, Tool 3)Break the Cycle, Staind 4)The Green Album, Weezer 5)Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray BOTTOM LINE: Sugar Ray released a breezy pop album that was just about perfect. Weezer showed that pop music can rock AND be fun. The top 3 were all possibly career defining albums. Staind used honesty, Tool used brute force, and System of a Down used politics and hard hitting riffs. Single of the Year 1)Soul Singin', The Black Crowes 2)Let Me Blow Ya Mind, Eve feat. Gwen Stefani 3)Family Affair, Mary J. Blige 4)Clint Eastwood, Gorillaz 5)(tie)Don't Tell Me, Madonna and New York, New York, Ryan Adams BOTTOM LINE: Soul Singin' made your soul sing, period. The Eve and Mary J songs were the two most interesting songs in two genres that seem to get increasingly stale each year. Clint Eastwood was pure fun. Don't Tell Me showed a nice new side of Madonna, and Ryan Adams' song became a tribute to the greatest city in America, "we still love you New York." Best New Artist 1)Gorillaz 2)Michelle Branch 3)American Hi-Fi Best Video Of the Year 1)Alien Ant Farm, Movies 2)Sum 41, In Too Deep 3)Fatboy Slim, Weapon of Choice BOTTOM LINE: Alien Ant Farm and Sum 41 both paid tribute to classic movies, AAF doing Willy Wonka and the Karate Kid, while Sum 41 did the Rodney Dangerfield diving tribute from Back to School. And who can forget Christopher Walken dancing his a*s off through that hotel? Best Exit From a Group: Wes Borland This means Limp Bizkit has no one with any musical talent. Good job Wes! Best Live Show 1)Black Crowes 2)U2 3)Barenaked Ladies 5 Albums I Anxiously Await for 2002 1)A Perfect Circle 2)Chris Cornell and Rage Against the Machine 3)The Mighty Mighty Bosstones 4)Unwritten Law 5)Robert Plant and his new band The Worst of the Year Worst Albums 1)Weathered, Creed 2)New Old Songs, Limp Bizkit 3)Britney, Britney Spears 4)Glitter, Mariah Carey 5)Cocky, Kid Rock Artists Who Should Be Gagged/Punished 1)Scott Stapp: his punishment is thevoid99's wish...Jesus comes down and kicks his a*s for stealing his poses 2)Fred Durst: Fred has to give Christina Aguilera head while she looks like Dee Snyder 3)Michael Jackson: he loses custody of his kids...do I really need to explain why? 4)Slipknot: they must listen to HOURS of Hanson, perhaps then they'll be able to figure out what melody is 5)Aerosmith: Aerosmith will be tied up and have drugs shot into them until they can make an album that has as much balls to the wall rock and roll power as Toys in the Attic Worst Song (I think all of these are self explanatory) 1)Jaded, Aerosmith 2)Hero, Enrique Iglesias 3)Superman, Five for Fighting 4)Bodies, Drowning Pool 5)One Step Closer, Linkin Park (ok, this one needs an explanation: Lead singer=Beavis wannabe!) 5 Artists You'll See on Vh1's Where are They Now in 10 years 1)Linkin Park 2)Papa Roach 3)Kid Rock 4)Shakira 5)Shaggy 5 Artists Whose Up Coming Albums I Hope Are Permanently Delayed 1)Papa Roach 2)Limp Bizkit 3)Disturbed 4)Orgy 5)Bloodhound Gang Disappointing Album of the Year: V by Live Worst Video: You Rock My World, Michael Jackson...why Chris, WHY? She's at her best when she extends her vitriol on bands like Eden's Crush. 5)Divine_Cheese-yeah, he's from England so he has cra*py taste in music, but he still writes good reviews ;) Best New Writer Lambchops wins again. Her reviews flow nicely, and let's face it, I think she's the female equivalent of me. Oh, and she's HOT too. ;) Best Columnist/column thevoid99 wins for his Nine Inch Nails columns.
