THE TOP TEN MOVIES OF 2001

Dec 20 '01

The Bottom Line The Best Films of 2001, and Believe me the top 3 movies are some of the best filmmaking ever been produced in HOLLYWOOD in the past years.

Stating that 2001 is on the brink of ending and that in the best movies by decade or nowhere there is for year so I decided to write one on, the best movies of the year 2001.

A few movies were "eventful enough to make the list but not all can be "THE TEN" so these are 10 honorable mentions that unlike the little train that could didn't.

HONERABLE MENTIONS:
Hannibal- He's back Clarice!
A Knight's Tale- He will Rock you!
Memento- Silent and hidden but great film of 2001!
The Score- DeNiro, Norton, and Brando!
Spy Game- Best of Both Generations!
ALI- Like A butterfly and stings like a BEE!
Jurassic Park 3- Better then Lost World!
Kiss of the Dragon- Best Fighting Flick!
The Pledge- Jack's Back!
I am Sam- Tearjerker max GREAT FILM!

Now On With the Top Ten List

10. A.I. Artificial Intelligence- By Far Director Steven Spielberg’s darkest venture ever. This movie was the love and labor of late director Stanley Kubrick, The movie was about a young robot boy Haley Joel Osmont who all he wants from life is to be loved and be a member of a family, until the family’s boy awakens from a coma or some sort of disease and the mother ditches him in the woods where he in a WWF style demolishing Robots jamboree, hosted by "Braveheart's" Brendan Gleeson he meets Gigolo Joe played with the greatness of future superstar Jude Law. Who with his help little robot David, tries to find his maker. Movie was critically hailed but failed in the box office. Golden Globe Nomination for Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Jude Law

9. Vanilla Sky- Why? Easier said then viewed with this film, Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell, Jason Lee, with cameo's by Steven Spielberg, and Directed by Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous helmer Cameron Crowe. Without giving much of the secretive plot away, Cruse plays David Ames, who has 51% of his company over the 50% of the Seven Board members who he calls the 7 dwarfs, But this movie is one of those lets try and guess what the hell is going on!! It goes for the throat with twists and turns and if I go on I might have to kill myself for releasing the plot. Just see this film!

8. Heartbreakers- The First of Two Gene Hackman films on this list, Of course this film seems out of place compared to the last two hard in your face dramatic material. But 2001 was the year of surprises and this movie was a happy surprise at that. The Movie stars Sigourney Weaver as Maxine Conners and Jennifer Love Hewitt as her beautiful daughter Paige, together these two are a pair of Mother-Daughter Con Artists. Who together deceive men and run with their money in divorce settlements. Hackmans turn as William Tesey the Tobacco Tycoon is extremely funny, grand fun in every sense of the word.

7. The Mummy Returns- By Far one of the best popcorn flicks of the year, The Mummy Returns is the sequel to the hit movie The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraiser, Rachel Weiz,John Hannah, Oded Fair, Arnold Vosloo and The Rock as the Scorpion King who gets his own movie next year. The Special effects are brilliant and the movies strives on action which we haven’t had a movie like this since Indian Jones and the Last Crusade, Great film the Ending could of used a little more but overlooked it in the way of typical summer filmmaking. (At least the ending here wasn't as bad as the turkey dud that Planet of the Apes had!!)

6. Pearl Harbor- December 7th a day that which will live in infamy opened to harsh reviews and a Titanic hype to it. The Film stars Ben Affleck as Rafe McCrawley, and Josh Hartnett as Danny Walker. English Actress Kate Beckensale plays the Love interest to the best friends but besides all the love story mush there was a war movie going on! Michael Bay who directed Armageddon and the Rock, lays it all on the line for the action scenes which include the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the Doolittle Raid in Japan. Grand movie in its own way and Stands on its own. Give this film a break, it was better then Titanic, and no one has given it a chance.

5. The Royal Tenenbaums- Gene Hackman, Angelica Huston, Bill Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke and Owen Wilson, Danny Glover, and director Wes Anderson take an ensemble cast and push the term comedy to the max, This movie is a experience I recommend everyone tend to see by the time its in wide release in January. Just the cast spells it out. Gene Hackman received a best actor nomination in the forthcoming golden globes.

4. Ocean's 11- Oh good god! George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Elliott Gould, Don Cheadle’s, Carl Reiner, the cast spells it all. And Director Steven Soderberg of Traffic and Erin Brockovich leaves us with the BEST POPCORN flick of the year. What an Ensemble cast to hit the movie screens for days until another release hits it harder. The movie's story is about Clooney’s character who wants to rob 3 of Garcia's casino's in one night, with his 11 cohorts. Remake of Rat-Pack movie.

3. SHREK- "Then I saw her Face- Now I'm A Believer". By far the funniest animated film to be released in years, deserving of Oscars first best motion picture animated. This movie is a fractured fairy tale of which Mike Meyers plays the voice of Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Shrek's sidekick Donkey, Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona, and John Lithgow as Lord Farquaad (read that name really close). Spielberg’s DreamWorks released this Box Office giant and send so many hits at Disney it wasn't funny (actually it was but...) Great family film for adults and children. Golden Globe nomination for Best Film Comedy, and should be shoo-in for Best Animated Motion Picture at the Oscars.

2. A Beautiful Mind- Russell Crowe gives another bravura performance as John Forbes Nash JR. the Nobel Peace Prize Winner. Jennifer Connelly plays his wife. Ron Howard who directed last years The Grinch, shows us some real skill this time around with a great movie, and with the next movie on my list will be the Gladiator, Traffic match at the OSCARS. Golden Globe noms for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress, and Director.

And to Number one!

1. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.

Now looking at the past movies this year was the year of ensemble cast movies with great directors we had for example, The Whole Tenenbaum family and Friends, Danny’s Gang in Ocean's 11, Shreks Voices, ALI's whole cast and now we get even more superior with, Lord of the Rings. Starring Elijah Wood, Sir Ian Mckellen, Christopher Lee, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, John Rhyes-Davies, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean, Sean Astin, and more. Based upon J.R.R. Tolkiens Legendary Trilogy, Director Peter Jackson gives us fans what we have been wanting for years, and throw that Bashki Animated movie into an acid pit to disintigrate. My advice is to see this movie; my other review gives greater detail to this film, because here I am just summing this movie up. Great Film for Fans, Critics, and all around, Golden Globe Nominations for Best Picture, Director, Score, Song, and among other things Special Effects were not done by George Lucas's Industrial Light and Magic.
Like I said before the Best Picture this year will either be Lord of the Rings or A Beautiful Mind, and will come down to one of the closest Oscar Chases in years, Go see These movies on this list or rent them on DVD or VHS and you will not be displeased.
