After admiring colleagues and their Digital SLRs for years, I finally went out and purchased the Canon EOS 30D. I paid $2400 for the body and a Canon 24-70 L lens, as I didn't want to get the kit lens. The camera fells very well built, the controls are very intuitive and the unit performs seriously fast! However this doesn't mean you can switch from a Point-and-Shoot and start taking great pictures, there's still a few hundred features that'll take months to explore and master. The new larger LCD allows you to check the sharpness of pictures with ease, and doesn't seem to reduce battery life by too much. Spot metering gives the user more control. Aside from this, it is almost identical to the EOS 20D.
I would seriously recommend this camera to anyone, beginner or intermediate users alike. Photography is such joy when you have a camera that works the way you want it to.
