I admit that I've never owned an air conditioner before so don't know how subjective this brief review will be. However, I DO know that this unit has exceeded ten-fold my expectations.

I first thought that 5300 BTU would be too stingy for our 11 x 14 (154 SF) bedroom and that I may regret not purchasing a beefier unit. However, it has been installed and has been running now for several hours but after about 20 minutes (and the outside temperature was about 89), it was like a meat locker in the room! YAY!!!! I can't get our cats to leave! haha.
My other worry was installation. First off, the unit was light enough for me to manhandle it in the car at Sears. It sits perhaps 11 inches tall (think the size of a regular piece of paper) and smallish-to medium sized, so it was not overly intrusive at all. You install the side curtains (about 4 screws each side), screw in a couple of brackets to your window frame (easy), slide the sucker in, close the window, extend the curtains and secure them with two screws on each side and other than plugging it in, you're basically done. It took us less than 30 minutes to get WONDERFUL relief from the heat! I bought this house 8 years ago and dreaded every Summer when we may have a dozen 85+ days; and I'd always said I was going to get an air conditioner. Well, I'm here to tell you that I am intrinsically happy with this model and so sorry I waited.
The previous poster mentioned the noise was loud or unbearable. Perhaps his unit was an anomaly, because the sound it makes is no more or less than I've heard any other air conditioner to make. It is a gentle whirring. Maybe it's just that it is harder for some people to get used to things. But honestly, it is not objectionable at all.
There is a remote -- which I guess is fairly standard. I like that it is quite simplistic in operation: temperature settings from 60 to 85F (don't ask me why that high...), a 2-speed fan toggle, a mode toggle between fan and cooling, and a handy timer that gives you 1-hour increments for the unit to turn off, or when off, 1-hour increments until it goes on. Who knows -- this may be quite basic but it is wholly sufficient.
In any event, we bought this unit after work (anticipating a BIG heat wave here in the SF Bay Area -- and believe me, we normally don't need air conditioners for the most part here). We reasoned that we would try this model, and if we liked it, we'd get another for the guest bedroom (where my wife does her computing and my stepdaughter stays occasionally). Well, we liked this model so much (and at about $125) that we're going back TOMORROW to buy another. That's about as sterling a testimonial as I can give.
I will not give the unit a full 5-star rating only because I have no personal previous interfacing with my own air conditioners and it wouldn't be fair. After all, maybe there are others that make NO noise. Accordingly I will set the benchmark at 4 stars because I would be wildly surprised if anything could really cool a room better or more satisfactorily. I would not hesitate to purchase this model again, and uh, I guess I will in about 12 hours... ;-) Now - heat-wave, schmeat-wave! Bring it on!
