The Bottom Line Have you seen any of these fantastic flicks? Will you? Let me know! (Don't let it snow...)
December doesn’t mean you have to watch holiday movies. In fact you have probably already watched all the ones worth watching like 1947’s Miracle on 29th Street (and I don’t mean 29th_Candidate’s street, ahem!) and Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life. During Thanksgiving weekend at my parents’, I did, unfortunately, catch Ron Howard’s monstrosity How The Grinch Stole Christmas, but I nodded off throughout it so I can’t recommend it to any adults reading, though kids love it, which maybe satisfies the criteria for this write-off. Yes, sampo24? So I will give you a very eclectic list of mostly colored movies (and I don’t mean they’re made with all African-Americans!) that I have enjoyed this past month in the hope that at least one will catch your fancy and cheer you up if need be. Thanks for reading and bah humbug! In order of when I saw them: 1. 2000’s Planet Of The Apes. I was so intrigued by this intelligently-crafted movie that I rented the cool original and its sequels. Only the last one should be skipped. Same make-up artist as on The Grinch. Shocking, suspenseful and sometimes hilarious. 2. Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? With Spencer Tracy (his last role), Katherine Hepburn and Sydney Poitier. In the early sixties a white girl and black boy want to get married and we all learn the meaning of real love. Gripping. 3 1978’s American Hot Wax. This is the story of Allen Freed, a Cleveland disc jockey who coined the name “rock and roll” and was its first promoter. Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and a lot of great Do-Wop bands recreate their first show. Fun! Catch a very young Jay Leno here! 4 1958’s I Married A Monster From Outer Space. B/W Horror flick that is thought-provoking and tasteful. Aliens steal the souls of humans and take over their bodies. Quite enjoyable with great acting. 5 The Main Event. Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal definitely have sparks between them as she must make him fight again since she went bankrupt and his contract is all she owns. It’s silly and sexy. 6 1985’s After Hours, also known as 1984’s One Night In SoHo, directed by Martin Scorcese. Brilliant comedy where Griffin Dunne (American Werewolf In London) goes downtown NYC to meet Rosanna Arquette and ends up being blamed for her suicide and local robberies by Chong and Marin and becomes a statue that is then robbed. Watch this one. 7 Mr. Holland’s Opus. Richard Dreyfuss in a wonderful movie as a music teacher who grows to love teaching because of his students, then is let go when his department is gotten rid of. You’ll laugh and cry. 8 1953’s Niagara. Directed by Henry Hathaway, but I thought it was Hitchcock. Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotton in color at Niagara Falls as they try to kill each other and get away with it. Absolutely riveting. 9 1951’s The Day The Earth Stood Still. B/W sci-fi drama. A spaceship lands in Washington with a message from an invulnerable, powerful robot of their taking over, but the spaceman inside the ship goes undercover to live among our people and compassion builds in him and us. Great message for today as well. 10 O Brother, Where Art Thou? A charming George Clooney, danceable bluegrass tunes and the bad guys are humiliated and ruined. Lots of cute humor done in a light-hearted way as convicts escape and the leader tries to get back with his frustrating wife. Final Thoughts Tonight I may be watching bits and pieces of one of the classic Christmas movies or possibly all of Jewel’s holiday special since I like music in general and haven’t listened to her in a while. I’m not really in a holiday spirit with my biker sweetie doing the roadtrip thing with his best guy friend. So I hope my list introduced you to some fun non-holiday movies for any of you just wishing it was next year already. Good riddance, 2001. Bah humbug! This review is part of my "Bah, Humbug! Write-off", where you pick a popular product where you are one of the minority that absolutely hates it.
