The Bottom Line 6 songs-all dealing with one theme: unrequited love
One of the greatest things about music is that 99.999999% of the songs out there deal with love in some way, shape, or form, be it getting married to someone, or be it a breakup, or whatnot. And one part of love is that unrequited love. That love we have for someone out there who, unfortunately for us, does not return that love. And yes, folks, it's happened. I have an incredibly big crush on a guy-I really care about him a lot. Happened not long after I turned 17 this past October (gee, what a nice late birthday present). Problem is, for me, he's got a girlfriend, isn't that wonderful *gets huge look of envy on her face*. Luckily, we're getting to be good friends, this guy and I, but I naturally want to be more. And he's gonna graduate from our high school next May (I'm still but a junior)-I'd love to tell him how I feel, but I don't know if I should since he's got a girlfriend-however, who knows if I'll ever get the chance to tell him again...I'm between a rock and a hard place here. So there's the background on my crush, who has inspired me to write this. And I've found that my crush is divided into 4 portions: 1. The "conflicting emotions" portion (is it deep love or am I still in the "really, really, REALLY like him" stage?-these feelings can change from day to day). 2. The "comfort" portion (this is where any songs that fit in this category remind me of how sweet a guy my crush is, this portion reminds me of why I have a crush on him, and also when I hear any songs in this category, it's like he's right there and reassuring me that things are gonna work out fine). 3. The "frustrations/despair" portion (this is where any songs that are here can help me get through those days of jealously, those days where I'm just down 'cause he's not involved with me romantically and 'cause we're not that close of friends yet and 'cause I haven't told him how I feel about him yet and 'cause I don't want to think about the fact that he's graduating next spring, so I barely get enough time to really get to know him and all that stuff). 4. The "confessions of love" portion (this is dealing with those days when I just gush to anyone within hearing distance about the guy I adore or when I write poems or whatever dealing with the guy I have a thing for). And so, I have made a little list of songs dealing with unrequited love and crushes and all that, songs that can help me on the days I'm feeling down because my affections are not being returned by this certain person (whose name I will not reveal). And I also figure this list will help those of you out there who are going through the exact same thing I am going through. 1."FALLIN'"-Alicia Keys This is probably one of THE coolest songs to come out this year. This is my "conflicting emotions" song dealing with the guy I like. And the lyrics speak the feelings so well: Sometimes I love ya Sometimes you make me blue Sometimes I feel good At times I feel used Lovin' you, darlin' Makes me so confused I keep on fallin' In and out Of love With you I never loved someone The way that I Love you Oh, oh, I Never felt this way How do you give me so much pleasure And cause me so much pain? So, yeah, this song deals with the way my emotions for this person can change rapidly, and it's confusing and it's scary and yet so wonderful all at the same time. 2."HARVEST MOON"-Neil Young Granted, this song isn't really about a crush in particular. Basically, from what I gather of the lyrics, it's about him wanting to be with this girl he once had a relationship with, he still loves her and wants to see her again. But it does make me think of my crush. This is my "comfort" song. He was playing this song one day (he likes Neil Young's music), and so now every time I hear this song, I just think about him and it's a nice little comfort for me, kinda like he's right there with me or something. I think the most romantic, most touching, sweetest part of the song is the chorus: Because I'm still in love with you I want to see you dance again Because I'm still in love with you On this harvest moon That's just a really beautiful way to put things, I think-and I think the chorus, if anything, describes how I feel the best. This is one of my absolute favorite Neil Young songs, by the way, and I find it nice to know that my crush likes this song, too. Like I said, this song is a comfort to me. 3."LAYLA"-Eric Clapton Okay, granted, this song is not from a girl's point of view. But this is definitely one of THE greatest unrequited love songs EVER recorded. And so with this song, any feelings of jealousy I may have towards my crush's girlfriend can be taken out through the way the music sounds in this song (it's a tad on the frustrated side, with the whole guitar thing), and the lyrics, I can belt them out and just let all my frustrations out in general with this song. It's perfect. Which is why this is my "frustrations/despair" song. And considering the fact that this is also one of my all-time favorite songs ever recorded, I think the song's entire lyrics deserve to be put in here: What'll you do when you get lonely And nobody's waiting by your side? You've been running And hiding much too long You know it's just your foolish pride Layla You've got me on my knees Layla I'm begging, darling, please Layla Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? I tried to give you consolation When your old man had let you down Like a fool I fell in love with you You turned my whole world upside down Layla You've got me on my knees Layla I'm begging, darling, please Layla Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? Let's make the best of the situation Before I finally go insane Please don't say We'll never find a way And tell me all my love's in vain Layla You've got me on my knees Layla I'm begging, darling, please Layla Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? Layla You've got me on my knees Layla I'm begging, darling, please Layla Darling, won't you ease my worried mind? Great song. Perfect expression of unrequited love. Just perfect. 4."LONG, LONG TIME"-Linda Ronstadt This is another one that goes into the "frustrations/despair" pile. I love the chorus, which goes (well, it alternates, but the main one goes): 'Cause I've done Everything I know To try and make you mine And I think I'm gonna love you For a long, long time This basically deals with envy for the girls who got to be with your crush, and so you've tried to get them to notice you in that way, but alas, it doesn't work out. My parents were playing music one night on the computer, and I heard this song-the chorus was what hooked me, and I think this song describes me perfectly from the girl's point of view. 5."MIDNIGHT CONFESSIONS"-Grass Roots I love this song. Absolutely adore it. The music in here is great. And the lyrics are wonderful, too-this song closely describes my situation (I say "closely", because the guy I like doesn't have a "little gold ring" on his hand). But I like this part in here: VERSE 1: The sound of your footsteps Telling me that you're near Your soft gentle motion, baby Brings out the need in me That no one can hear, except CHORUS: In my midnight confessions When I tell all the world that I love you In my midnight confessions When I say all the things that I want to I love you VERSE 2: Staggering through the daytime Your image on my mind Passing so close beside you, baby Sometimes the feelings Are so hard to hide, except Needless to say, this is my "confessions of love" song-this pretty much puts into words how I feel anytime he's around me and why I can get discouraged sometimes (because he's with someone else and not with me). 6."TIME IN A BOTTLE"-Jim Croce This song is so beautifully written, I think. This is another "confessions of love" song for me-this song describes exactly what I'd do in order to be with my crush. I'd alter time so that it'd work for us. This is another song I feel I should put the entire lyrics to: If I could save time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save every day 'Till eternity passes away Just to spend them with you If I could make days last forever If words could make wishes come true I'd save every day Like a treasure and then Again, I would spend them with you But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do Once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go Through time with If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true The box would be empty Except for the memory Of how they were answered by you But there never seems to be enough time To do the things you want to do Once you find them I've looked around enough to know That you're the one I want to go Through time with So there's my list of 6 songs in particular that I feel describe best how I feel about this person, this guy that, as I said, I care very deeply for. I figure I'm probably leaving a lot of songs out, so if and when you guys comment on my epinion, you can add some songs you feel would be worthy, too. I hope you enjoyed this list, though. |
