I have owned 3 of this exact model and was sure to purchase the protection plan... because of my experiences with similar units from other companies... What happens is that I am assuming it is the jewelry cleaner (that sits in the tank for an extended period) somehow causes the plastic tank to dissolve and crack... I know it sounds crazy... but 3 of them from Sharper Image and 1 from another company and they all did this over time.( about 6 months then it starts to crack) Thankfully Sharper Image stands by the protection plan ($11.95 per replacement) and sends you another unit.

I don’t keep the unit near any heating sources, in fact It is kept on my bathroom sink, not near any irons or blow-dryers...it is just a mystery that all of sudden a crack/leak/deterioration develops..
