Elegance in the Laurel Highlands

Written: May 28 '01 (Updated May 30 '01)
Pros:Elegance, diversity of things to do, georgeous rooms
Cons:somewhat expensive
The Bottom Line: Something for everyone from children to retired adults. Shangrila in the Pennsylvania Mountains.

A weekend drive from Washington D.C., Baltimore, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, or Columbus this hotel has something for everyone and lots of it. This is more of the classic resort than solely a "hotel" with more activities than any person can participate in a weekend or week. Situated in the Laural Highlands of Pennsylvania about 2 hours south of Pittsburgh this is the brain child of 84 lumber's founder.
No cost was spared in building this resort and it shows in the elegance of the buildings and rooms. Every detail was properly brought taken into account.
The outside facade is that of an elegant French Chateau and the inside of the main wings of the hotel is just as superb. The rooms are very spacious and well thought out. You could spend several days enjoying the decor the room but certainly the environment is something to be savored with it's manacured lawns, skiing facilities, equestrian area, and golf courses. Sorrounding the hotel is the pasteural setting of the Pennsylvania mountains which is home to "Ohio Pyle" (a state park with Kayaking and mountain biking) and Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Waters".
The hotel is home to a pethora of art works gathered from around the world displayed in a casual atmosphere. Numerous sitting rooms allow the guest to feel they are in a wonderful mountain home instead of a sterile hotel. For the less physically active patrons there is a newly redesigned SPA and swimming pool area set in a wooded setting. Throughout the complex of buildings are brass statues giving life to the area. Shopping and a game arcade also can fill your time leisurely roaming the palatial grounds. Certainly you will want to return to enjoy this hotel/resort during several seasons of the year.
