Pros:Beautiful Lobby. Spacious Rooms.
Cons:Horrible Service. Horrible Service. Overpriced Food. Horrible Service. Overpriced Rooms. Horrible Service.
The Bottom Line: If it's luxury you want, and you're in the Memphis area, go to 'The Peabody'. You'll pay a little more, but at least you get towels when you need them.
My husband and I recently stayed at the Adams Mark-Memphis while on vacation. I had incredibly high hopes as we are from St. Louis, MO and I know that the Adams Mark here is one of the more luxurious and beautiful hotels, likewise, it consistently gets outstanding ratings from its patrons.
However, the Adams Mark-Memphis is NOTHING like it's Midwestern counterpart...
First, we arrive:
My husband pulls up to use the valet parking, but where is the valet?? No problem, my husband killed time waiting for the valet by depositing me in the lobby and removing all of our luggage...still no valet...by the time that I had checked us in and received our keys and "complimentary" membership to their "Gold Club" the valet STILL had not arrived, so my husband ended up just giving our car keys to the guard who just laughed and never apologized for the 15 minute wait that 7 other families were experiencing.
Second, our restaurant experience:
We decided to eat at the hotel restaurant as we know that the Adams Mark in St. Louis has a 4 star restaurant that is consistantly raved about, and while the meal is pricy, the food is supposed to be well worth it.
The Memphis Adams Mark is not quite the same. Strike that, it WAS pricy but the food was not quite the same. Plus, their "entertainment" was a singing wait staff (Broadway and "light opera")...which normally I would find pleasing (after all, I am a classically trained operatic soprano)...but not in this case. The restaurant was practically deserted and they sat us within 15 feet of the singers who BELTED and BLEATED all over the scale and made it almost impossible to hear ones thoughts. Then the bill...ugh...then we left.
Third, our "service" issues:
While housekeeping was nice enough to wake us up our second day there and then leave when we told them we were coming, it turns out that they had one more present for us...NO TOWELS!
That's right, at $195 a night apparently when they take your dirty towels away, they don't think that you're worthy enough for fresh clean ones, so they just leave you towelless. Of course, being that we're trusting we didn't find this out until AFTER we had showered...nice.
Then, we decided to order a little 11pm snack so we called room service and for 1 dessert, 1 bottle of beer, 1 skim milk, 1 calamari (a tiny appetizer), and 1 French dip sandwich the total was $33. No, seriously. Then to make things ever better, they left half of our order out when they brought it to us (oops.)...then, NO ONE apologized for it, but they did take the beer and the dessert off of the tab for now a grand total of $20 for an appetizer, sandwich and milk. Grand.
Fourth, the "up and running" issues:
By this time we were officially none too pleased about staying at "the 2nd nicest hotel in Memphis" and were beginning to think that at $230 a night, the Peabody maybe would've been a wiser choice...then things only got better!
When attempting to access WebTV (which is $9.99 for 24 hours of internet access) we learned that the service was not currently "up and running"...however, this was AFTER they already charged our room for the "convenience". So, my husband went downstairs to tell them to cancel it and take it off of our bill and to ask if there wasn't a business lounge where he could use the internet briefly...well of course there was!! Just none of the employees knew the password to use it, he'd just have to wait until tomorrow when the manager was there. Ugh.
Finally, on our way out, I realized that I had NO desire to speak to ANYONE from this hotel, so I opted for the "express checkout" feature they had which is a way to check out with using your television in your room...of course it wouldn't work. I called the front desk only to get a young woman who told me, "Oh yeah, it's not working, you have to come down here to get your bill"...and then she hung up on me.
I steamed down to the lobby and turned in the keys, the girl asked me if I needed a receipt showing a $0 balance and I said "No"...then she said "Great, have a good day" and turned and walked away...didn't even ask how my stay was, didn't say "Come see us again soon"...nothing.
Which pretty much sums up what the Adams Mark-Memphis is willing to do for their patrons--NOTHING.
