Bang for the Buck???
Apr 07 '02
The Bottom Line Attractive appearance and key features such as self-cleaning, convection, temperature probe, front mounted controls and storage drawer.
It is not easy to select the ideal range. This will not help in that regard, and it would be nice if a salesman or somebody with a broad experience could shed some light on the decision making process, particularly bang for the buck.
I decided to buy a 30" free standing self-cleaning, gas range. Self-cleaning ovens are better insulated, which should offset the higher cost, but it is a feature I would buy regardless. I generally purchase higher end models for appliances that last long periods of time, except cars. For big-ticket items I generally wind up spending much more than I originally anticipate after I learn more and more about the variety of items offered. I wanted to buy a very good stove without getting into sticker shock, which initially was $1,000. Now to choose a brand/model. It was difficult for me to narrow down the brands, I am a little naive with the kitchen and have a relatively good feeling about most brands. I cut the list to either the Maytag's Jenn-Air or Whirlpool's KitchenAid and read mostyl good reviews.
After bouncing around a few sites and reading what I could find I had to add convection capability to the range, and increase my budget accordingly. Every personal review I came across sang the praises of this feature, so it became a requirement.
I narrowed my focus to either the Jenn-Air #JGR8850BDB (Maytag) or the KitchenAid #KGRT607HBL (Whirlpool) listed at Sears for $1,269.99 and $1,549.99 respectively. Armed with printouts from an internet site listing the Jenn-Air at $1,070 and the KitchenAid at $1,299 Sears agreed to match the offerings. After narrowing them down, my wife made the final choice and selected the KitchenAid, which also had a $100 mail-in-rebate. We shall see.
