I knew several people who had bought their cars through a private auction dealer, all happy with their purchases. (Note: this is not one of the public rip-off auctions you see advertised)This dealer locates and sells cars for $50 over NADA (not Kelley, which I later found to be inflated) value. When we needed a new car, this is the route I wanted to take, but my husband was reluctant because he was unfamiliar with the process. Since he had bought his car from CarMax, he talked me into giving them a shot.
So we went there and did not find the car I wanted. The salesman, who was very friendly and respectful AT THE TIME, showed us their website, where we found a car that looked like what I wanted.
Then I had the audacity to tell the salesman I would prefer to see the car before purchasing it (website photos were horrible). So then his true colors emerged, and he became very condescending and hostile. He kept screaming over and over "What don't you understand?" as my husband watched in shock. Of course, I couldn't get a word in edgewise. Obviously the salesman thought I had no other choice except and standard dealer.
After several minutes of this abuse, I picked up my coat and told my husband "We're leaving". On the drive home, he said he couldn't believe how I was treated. I told him "Honey, that's how car dealerships treat women, and that's why I didn't want to come here to begin with. I'm buying my car through the auction dealer like I wanted to all along".
I did, and THAT - not CarMax - is the only way to go IMO. It was by far the best car-buying experience I've ever had.
