ColdplayJan 02 '02 (Updated Jan 04 '02)The Bottom Line Watch out. Coldplay is making splashes with their American debut LP Parachutes. ***I also have a review on Coldplay's Parachutes elsewhere on this site. I did write this review first though, and I only wrote the other because I did not go into detail about their album in this piece..I saved that information. All that the two articles share is the first four paragraphs of this review..I'm sorry for the confusion...Each review does exceed the necessary 100 words for republishing/repackaging. Thanks for your understanding, and if you have any questions, please email me at Worntreads@aol.com with "Epinions" in the subject line.*** What the...? Coldplay? Who is Coldplay? I listen to the radio everyday and I have never heard of...what's their name again? Well, get used to their name because they will stay around for quite sometime. Stocks and Music Advice..the Perfect Combo I first heard about Coldplay in my father's Financial Times, and took note even though it was probably not the best place to get music advice. Anyways, they had labeled Coldplay's cd Parachutes as the album that kids, teenagers, parents, and grandparents could all agree on. I certainly must add that this is not totally accurate. My mom dislikes them (then again, she is an 'N Sync fan), but the rest of my family (grandparents and great-aunts and uncles included) loves them. WAIT-I Know Them!! If you have heard of Coldplay, it is most likely through one of two songs: Yellow (Look at the stars/See how they shine for you/And all the things you do/And they're all yellow) or Trouble (I/Didn't mean to cause you trouble/I never meant to do you harm). They are the two "radio friendly" singles released from the album that can only be labeled as divine inspiration. (If you want more information on their album, please read my review of Coldplay's Parachutes Cookie-Cutter Molds No More Their sound is totally unlike anything that I listen to on a regular basis, but I have had friends compare them to Travis, Oasis, The Beatles, name a British rock group critically lauded for their talent and music ability, and you will find a comparison to Coldplay. They were recently up for "Best Rock Group" and "Best-Kept Secret" at the 2001 VH1 MyMusic Awards. I can not remember accurately (as I did not watch the program) but I do recall thinking that they won the latter award. Back On-Topic Well, Why is Coldplay the next big thing? I thought you would never ask. Tick-Tock For one: Their timing. They are doing something drastically different than what is currently mainstream. They are rock, but they are not doing anything like what is heard on regular radio. It just isn't being done. In the wake of September 11, people have been craving music with a message that isn't filled with processed fluff. This is why their song Trouble has been garnering a lot of airplay and attention, to Coldplay's surprise. "We aren't exactly Korn," said Chris Martin, the lead singer, said in response to being told of Trouble's airplay. The British Mystique For another: There is always something about that British rock group. There has been one in the past, and there will be one in the future. The Beatles are obvious choices in this department, but Oasis certainly had a run for their money. It could be that England just has a plethora of hot guys running around with guitars and drums and amazing voices, or it could be their lovely accent that America loves hearing on radio stations and new interviews. Whatever the reason, the whole world seems to have an obsession with British pin-up boys. And When All Else Fails The ultimate reason: their music. They have an undeniable genius lurking in the background while the lead singer, Chris Martin, leaks out his pain and love and all these other emotions in a way that could be described as ethereal. The pure emotion in his voice is amazing, and the soft rock ambiance music in the background really adds to the experience. ~*~*Thanks for reading!!*~*~ |
