Simple & Fun!

Written: May 29 '01 (Updated May 30 '01)
Pros:Simple, colorful, fun racing
Cons:Too short, no internet multiplayer, unbalanced
The Bottom Line: Well yes, I have finished grade school, but this game is still enjoyable!

After a quite cool video opening, the menu suggests a few options. The basic option is where you race the computer - You progress through 6 levels, each one contains 4 maps, and another last level containing 1 map. In each map you race with the ‘boss’ and with 5 or 6 (I don’t remember. Sue me) other racers. You can also race against time and race with a friend on the same computer.

The levels
The basic race option is where you’ll spend most of the time when single-playing. The first level is really easy and takes a few tries to pass, the second one is a bit harder and the third one looks impossible when you first try it. Try a lot and you’ll succeed. Those levels are very fun, they all look totally different with cool design and are very colorful. The next 3 levels are the disappointing part of this game. They are the same as the first 3 ones – but mirrored! That means the 4 level contains the same maps level 1 has, but instead of the right turning here you’ll turn left. Too bad they didn’t make more levels - the levels are really good. The last level contains only one map – which is quite nice.

The racing
The racing itself doesn’t involve only driving – thank god. There are Lego pieces spread all over the map in different colors – red, blue, green and white, each one gives you a different power up. The red blue and green pieces give you the power up itself and the white makes it better. For example – the green piece makes you drive faster for a few seconds, and taking 3 more white pieces makes you ‘warp’ a lot ahead in the lap. The red piece will shoot something on the racer ahead (depending on how many whites you took) and the yellow one will leave something to the racer behind. Those pieces make the race more fun and challenging.

The problem in the game is the multiplayer game. First, you won’t find Internet or any other style of multiplayer game. There is only the one computer mode – where you and your friend play on the same keyboard (or other device, perhaps?). But without getting into that, I found that the multiplayer mode is unbalanced.

The ‘warping’, which reminds a bit sliding (If you know ‘Sliders”, you know what I mean), is not good for the game and makes it unbalanced. Let me explain myself – when all of the racers are close, there is tension. One shot at the racer ahead (given with the red piece) and you’ll be the leader. You can’t know who’ll win. That’s fun. But when you or the rival warp you’re not near him, and the tension is gone. There are situations in the one-computer game, where you can know who’ll win only a few seconds after the race has started – He took all of the white pieces at first and slide. You don’t get white pieces (because the leader took it) and it’s obvious that you’ll lose. And that situation happens a lot. That’s why my friend and me are playing with a rule we’ve invented – warping is not allowed!

Another problem I found with the multiplayer mode is that you HAVE to have a joystick (or other input device) connected to play multiplayer games. What’s weird with that? That the multiplayer can be played on the same keyboard! Everytime I play a multiplayer game I make sure my joystick is connected well so I could play with the keyboard.
LEGO: Check games before you release them!

Let’s sum up: The game is fun. It’s too short – only 13 original different maps. Multiplayer over the Internet is not allowed. Multiplayer over one computer is unbalanced. Looks like my recommend opinion turned into a not recommended – But I do recommend the game! Why – the 13 levels are fun to play again and again, since they are made very good, and it’s fun playing with a friend on one computer. You’ll just have to not warp, or maybe not use the green power-up at all. Or you can play it normal, but it will not be that fun. This could have been a superb game, all they had to is check the little detail and not rush with the release date.
