The Gore that Didn't Run Against Bush.Jan 09 '02 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line I don't know who's to say what the best are. I did my best and tried. Hope you like it. :) In my humble opinion the following are THEE best horror movies in no particular order and for no particular reason other than I like them: 1. The Exorcist : This movie scared the very $#!t out of me! I watched it on cable in middle school and was terrified and afraid to close my eyes. I watched the new version on the big screen ALL alone in the theater. I swear. I went by myself and two girls were there for the first half hour and left; then it was JUST me. It stars the then child actress Linda Blair as possessed by a demon. It's a cult classic. She puts her mother and everyone around her through Hell! I think what scares me the most is that it is based on an allegedly true story. The movie is powerful in that her mother goes to great lengths to get her exorcised when the medical community keeps telling her it's illness (mental or otherwise). 2. Prince of Darkness A cheesy '80's horror movie that features Alice Cooper, is a must see for the enthusiast. A bunch of physicists go to a church to study a mass of green goo that is swirling, etc. This goo sprays itself into people's mouths and possesses them. There is an eerie dream/telecast that has a vague, staticky, blackened creature standing in the front of the church saying, "This is NOT a dream. We are broadcasting from the year 1999...." Creepy and resonant! 3. The Shining A CLASSIC starring Jack Nicholson. He takes his family to a hotel in Colorado to take care of the place all winter. The hotel has had its share of bad things that happened here and Jack (the main character) can see elements of what occurred there. His son can, too. They share what someone calls "the shine" (psychic ability). It's directed by Stanley Kubrik, so it has that edge! It is definitely a must see. It's on my favorite movies ever list. 4. Carrie This one stars Sissy Spacek and John Travolta. It is full of '70's CHEEZ! It's based on a Stephen King novel, so that's the upside. But it has that split screen '70's technology thing that gives way to MORE CHEEZ! It's about an outcast girl who has psychic ability, but doesn't know how to channel it. It emerges when she is angry and isn't properly channeled! They play a cruel trick on her on prom night and she pays them back with a vengeance! 5. Nightmare on Elm Street (1-3) The 3-D one was just plain DUMB! This series will threaten to make your dreams come TRUE! It stars Robert Englund as Freddie Kruegar, a lunatic-spirit with knives on his finger tips and a red and green striped sweater, and a burn victim skin texture... he rips through your psyche with his one liners and his "cutting" personality. He gets into your dreams and kills you in your sleep. The characters dream about him and of his murdering them and it comes true. Take some dramamine and stay awake! It gets its title from the Elm Street address in which most of this takes place. One, two... Freddie's coming for YOU.... three, four....better lock your door... seven, eight...better stay up late... nine, ten... never sleep again! Classic. Freddie's strong personality almost makes you side with him. I actually saw the third one first. It was my first date with my first real boyfriend (meaning I saw him for more than a week or two). 6. Psycho Must I tell you about the plot? It's about a deranged maniac who loves his mother SO much he won't let her go. Not even to be buried after death. There's the killing shower scene! Unforgettable....in ev'ry waaaaaay! Oh. Sorry. If you haven't seen this, then I truly and honestly don't know what's stopping you. I also liked part IV, when he wrestles with the psycho within and tries to resist his urges. There is footage of Henry Thomas playing a younger version of him and wearing a dress. It's more amusing than scary. But the original is SO worthwhile. It will make you fearful of motel rooms for a while. Especially the bathroom! 7. Blair Witch Project I liked it mostly in theory. It's the story of three kids who go out into the woods on an excursion looking for the mythological (?) Blair Witch. It's filmed with video cameras by the cast. It has a realistic shaky quality--annoying, but makes it more real. People love this movie or loathe it. The ending was creepy. If it's blood and guts you want, then this movie is not for you. I thought it was brilliant because fear is generally based on fear of the unknown, and in this movie the witch IS unknown because you only see evidence of her and nothing tangible. It's not the kind of movie you can watch over and over again. It's more of a one shot deal. 8. Night of the Living Dead What could be scarier than being cooped up in the middle of no where, in an abandoned farm house, with a bunch of living dead "zombie" critters crashing through the windows and trying to bite you and make YOU undead?! I can't think of anything off the top of my head. This is nightmare fodder! 9. Poltergeist I watched this movie when I was in like fourth grade in the movie theater and I SWEAR I wouldn't go near my own closet for months. They buy a house (unknowingly) built on an Indian burial ground. The spirits cause muchos mischief and suck the young daughter into a parallel universe or hell or wherever and she communicates with her parents through the static on TV. Quotable: "They're Heeeeere!" It's silly. Utterly ridiculous. But worth a watch for fun. 10. Rosemary's Baby Mia Farrow spawns Satan's child. This HAS to be the best child actor EVER. I doubt I need to say more. It is a must see! His tantrum before going to church is captivating and realistic. You just HAVE to see this. I can't tell you more. If you've missed it, then you're a rare find. And you need to watch this at least four times. Don't miss it. For ANY reason! Other runners up: Halloween Texas Chainsaw Massacre (LEATHERFACE!! I met him once! He signed my picture of him like this: "Becki, Let's do lunch. MY Way!" He was great!) Phantasm (I met the creepy old guy at the same Fangoria convention. He was cool.) Evil Dead Pumpkinhead Friday the 13th Debbie Does... oh. That's not horror. That's just a who-- Well, never mind. Just seeing if you're paying attention. Scream (So, it's silly. Most of them can be. There's a fine line between horror movies and comedies.) Ghost (I was TERRIFIED during the part when Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg were touching each other. It gave me nightmares for weeks.) Amityville Horror (How DO you spell that... nothing looks right to me) I guess that's it. In the spirit of my new habit, I wish to dedicate this one to fallenjesusboy because he is THEE first to personally invite me to a write off! :() I joined the EBD revolution, but wasn't personally invited. So, here you go, fall'. Thanks for reading! Have a fabulous day. |
