Buying the baddest and most expensive isn't the answer

The Bottom Line DON'T go straight to dell or gateway, look at smaller vendors on the internet or build your own it's NOT THAT HARD

In my short lifespan of 22 years my house has gone through nearly 9 name brand PCs. Every year we said 'what's the fastest and most expensive? we'll get that.' And we'd wait a few years years until the computer would practically crash just to open the word processor. Every few years it was throw 2000$+ to get this speed demon that would be decent in 6 months and obsolete in a year or two. Finally after upgrading one of the old computer's motherboards, ram, and HD for a fraction of the price of a new one, i decided to build my own. Part of it was assembled by a small mail order firm over the internet the rest was put in by me and stuff i found for cheaper (or just better). I spend 1000$ for the exact same specifications as a $2500 dell or gateway. 1600 athlon, 512 mb ram, 40 gigs, geforce3, the works. it's amazing how expensive these big name brands can be. Now all that isn't the best at the moment, but instead of spending 2000 every 2 years, i'll be spending maybe 100 every 6 months or so upgrading the slowest parts, and instead of falling to the end and then jumping to the front of the 'performace curve' i'll be riding the wave as the tech develops. G2k and dell aren't made to be upgradable, some of them have proprietary cases, motherboards, etc. which makes them a hassle to put non-dell or gateway stuff in them. you don't have to be a computer genius to put together your system or even replace the parts! i had zero hassle in my system, and for a little bit of research and effort i saved a LOT of money. just keep that in mind next time you want to get the 'latest' i.e. most expensive system from a big name. And i'll bet you they won't even use the cheaper and yet faster AMD chips, they'll be using the intel, even more incentive to charge you more than you should.
