B.G. is back for the streets with his latest album, The Heart of tha Streets Vol. 2: I am what I am. There is one thing for certain: B.G. was spot on with the album title. B.G. is what he is. What you see and hear is what you get.
If you haven't already heard the single "Move Around, and I have to worry about you if you haven't, then you already know the big news: Mannie Fresh and B.G. are back together again. B.G. announces the return of this partnership on "Move Around" when he spits: "I'm real so I ain't never ever forgot / Mannie Fresh was the reason that I was so hot / and we again bout to go back to the top / we gonna have the rap game back on lock".
And if you hadn't heard, B.G. also takes the opportunity to diss the former business partner of the two, "Now it's known by the whole world who a joke / he ain't no man got dreads you already know (wayne)". Although it has received mixed reactions from fans, this is probably one of the better tracks on the album. Most would agree that the album is better for the two working together again.
Now here's a disclaimer: if you are looking for meaningful music with deep messages, this album is NOT for you. This album is what B.Gizzle's albums always have been- gangsta. You can tell this just from the tracklisting, with songs like "Real N*gga," "Kill or Be Killed," "F*ck Em," and "Ain't No B*tch. If this is your thing, then this is YOUR album.
The beats on the album are interesting but largely hit or miss. One noticeable thing about more than a few of the beats is a kind of supernatural, eerie feel to the music on the album. There are haunting vocal samples and eerie instruments that give an unusual feel to the music. Some tracks that make excellent use of this feel are "Face Up" and "F*ck Em". "Face Up" uses an excellent piano sample to give a sinister feel to the track. "F*ck Em" uses an almost operatic vocal sample that really gives it an ominous feel. Along with this sound comes the typical boom bap of tracks like "Move Around" and the infectious horns of "Get Yo Mind Right".
This album is B.G. through and through. Fans of B.G. will love this album. People who are new to B.G.'s music might be turned off by the lack of variety, but don't be surprised if he converts more and more people to his music. Overall, I'd recommend this to any fan of B.G. and hip hop from the NO.
