My 10 Favorite Alien Movies
Jan 16 '02
The Bottom Line My favorite alien movies list only includes those I care to watch again and again!
I love science fiction movies! As a kid I grew up watching episodes of Lost in Space and Star Trek. I have always enjoyed movies of all genre but I hold a special place for movies having something to do with our universe, space, aliens and the unknown. Imagination, resourcefulness, against-all-odds, are key words associated in this genre and are the primary reasons why I enjoy science fiction alien films so much.
I`d have to say that my top 10 list will continue to be modified yearly, as new releases of science fiction alien movies come out. Classics will always remain classics, but my top 10 list includes only those that I care to watch again and again.
So here goes, in no particular order of priority:
Alien Resurrection - 1997 - Sigourney Weaver & Winona Ryder et al - The fourth film in the Alien series takes place aboard a huge military space lab. Scientists researching the aliens have cloned Ripley from preserved blood samples and resurrected you know what...Cloning, mutants, resurrection, experiments gone terribly awry, visceral, great scary looking aliens...what else do you need to know?
Species - 1995 - Ben Kingsley, Natasha Henstridge, Michael Madsen & Forest Whitaker- Scientists have created a half-human, half-alien hybrid with DNA codes obtained from somewhere in the universe. Now think about it, why would aliens want you to toy with DNA codes? Of course the hybrid’s survival instincts and alien supremacy help her escape. Now her primary objective is to mate with a disease free human...the premise is set and the race is on!
Predator - 1987 - Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers & Jesse “The Body” Ventura - A military special forces operative is sent on a covert mission to rescue another group which was sent into the jungle of a some Latin American country. After a battle with local guerrillas, they encounter signs that the equally capable men they were sent to rescue were all killed in an unusually ghastly way. It’s not long before the members of the new special forces team start getting picked off one by one, as they grow aware that they are up against something unearthly, an alien “predator” hunting them down for sport! But hey, the predator finally met the Terminator...a worthy opponent indeed!
Men in Black - 1997 - Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones -A veteran of a secret government agency secretly policing the comings and goings of aliens on Earth and a new recruit are assigned to recover a trinket that's been stolen by an intergalactic terrorist. This movie is so much fun that it actually makes you hope for a sequel...
The Fifth Element - 1997 - Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovovich & Chris Tucker - In 1914, a group of scientists in Egypt uncover the power of four magical stones which represent the ancient elements: earth, wind, fire, and water. This discovery summons the Aliens who warn them that the stones are no longer safe on Earth. Five thousand years later, a cab driver with a military background helps “The Fifth Element” on her mission to save the earth from being destroyed by an evil molten ball of lava. This is grand entertainment at it’s best!
The X-Files: Fight The Future - 1998 - David Duchovney & Gillian Anderson - The story begins in 15,000 B.C. when an alien creature attacks a caveman. Then the story cuts to present day when a boy at the same ancient spot, falls into a cave and is contaminated by a black substance. Cut to special FBI agents Mulder and Scully investigating a bomb threat in a Dallas Federal building. Although they find the bomb they are unable to prevent unknown forces at work. Later they find out about the contaminated bodies that were destroyed by the explosion and Mulder and Scully start their investigation. Forget about the unexplained anomalies of the series, this movie stands on it’s own. Mulder and Scully are fun to watch and this is a great 2 hour science fiction movie.
Mission to Mars - 2000 - Gary Sinise, Tim Robbins & Connie Nielsen - The first manned mission to Mars hopes to uncover new scientific discoveries, but the crew meets an unexplained catastrophe. A rescue mission, which sets out to bring back any surviving members of the crew, uncovers some startling evidence about what happened to the first crew on Mars. Not the best science fiction story telling but certainly entertaining enough for a space adventure. And yes, Martians did exist at one time...so now you know!
Stargate - 1994 - James Spader & Kurt Russell - The story begins in Giza, Egypt in 1928, where an archaeological expedition unearths an ancient ring with cryptic hieroglyphs. The story then moves to the present day, where an Egyptologist is trying to convince a group of skeptics that the pyramids were not built by man but by extraterrestrials! After the lecture, a military man offers him a job translating ancient tiles at an Egyptian archaeological site. The tiles hold a secret code to a “stargate” that leads to the other side of the universe. What can I say, I enjoy this movie...
Aliens - 1986 - Sigourney Weaver - For big-budget special effects, swift paced action and high-octane showmanship, Aliens, the sequel to Alien, is extremely hard to beat. Plenty of intensity and thrills from those vicious ultra-nasty creatures in the most enjoyable action science fiction alien movie of the eighties.
The Abyss - 1989 - Ed Harris & Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio - GET the directors cut - An underwater UFO, a group of adventurous oil riggers, a Navy SEAL officer with intentions to nuke the aliens (in case the aliens turn out to be soviet saboteurs in disguise), a near-death experience...This is pure entertainment!
Although I enjoyed many other great alien movies over the years such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Alien, Starman, Independence Day, Fire in the Sky, and some of these are truly classics don’t get me wrong, they simply have been bumped off my top 10 over the years...since my favorite list only includes those movies I care to watch again and again.
