I love Liquid Swords. The RZA's beats sound more evil than Slayer, and the GZA is a great MC.

A nice list, but your age may limit your scope.... (Reply to this comment)

MadTheory, nuff props to you for your solid reviews. You obviously put a lot of time into your craft and listening to hip-hop. However, your list does not feature one album (yes, I said "album" - LOL!) released prior to 1990. As a matter of fact, number ten on your list is the oldest on your list: Cube's "AmeriKKKa's..."

Perhaps you were lending heavy weight to commercial success as a criteria for your list, since CD sales for hip-hop skyrocketed in the '90s as MTV and BET reached the lucrative suburban set that could only get rap music by purchasing CDs -- rather than going to shows or listening (recording) off of the radio. I hope that is not the case.

Maybe that plays into the omission of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid In Full" (1987), Public Enemy's "It Takes A Nation of Millions..." (1988), De La Soul's "Three Feet High & Rising" (1989), Slick Rick's "The Great Adventures of... " (1988), Run-D.M.C.'s self-titled debut (1984), Big Daddy Kane's "Long Live The Kane" (1988), etc.

I am definitely NOT saying that all of these should have been included over the ones you named. However, I think it's incomplete, and borderline disrespectful :-) , to exclude anything from the '80s when speaking of solid albums.

And yes, IMHO, there is no way "Paid In Full" is not on this list.... "The Chronic" should be knocked down a notch or two.... I agree that "Illmatic" was over-rated, but it WAS a dope album from the first listen - the joint was leaked and released so that everyone in NYC had it way before the album dropped, which deaded its debut punch....

Peace!

OK I know I may be crazy, but I don't think Ice Cube really has an album in the top 10. He had great albums, but none that I think hit me and said, whoa that was unbelievable. I like Doggystyles postiion on the list good job there. Atliens does not merit top 10 in my opinion, Stankonia is the better choice. Ok, I have a problem with Resurrection being in the top 10. It is a good album, but not even the best by commun.

I'm really interested in this list, because I'm actually very new to hip-hop (growing up in a white, middle-class family, I just never got exposed to any of it, except for Run DMC on MTV when I was little), and I always love hearing about new albums to check out. Still, I'm stunned and appalled that "Paid in Full" isn't on this list. That's gotta be the dopest album in the history of dope albums. Kids, if anybody tells you that they don't like "Paid in Full", you should call the Feds immediately, because the person in question is probably a Communist, or a child molestor, or BOTH!!! Hehe...just kidding. Still, you gotta love that album.

LOL at all the madtheory hate...haha.....I love illmatic and it is in my top 10, but it isn't my number one (it's not better than death certificate or ATliens)....so it's currently number 3 on my list....I love Nas, but some people do tend to DR him a little bit

P.S. I actually like Miseducation of Lauryn Hill more than The Score (I don't like Pras that much)

Im not going to argue really, just wanted to say Im glad I finnally read a list that doesnt have Illmatic at #1. It might be in the upper half of mine, but alot of the albums you have here are better in my mind.. but then again i guess im just another "nas hater", so my opinion doesnt count lol.

There are A LOT of albums I haven't reviewed here - whether I've written on an album or not means nothing. And I don't "hate" on Nas at all -- I just don't believe Illmatic to be the greatest album EVAR that you Nas fans seem to believe -- or rather, have begun to believe in the past 4 years or so. Even when I heard it for the first time back in the mid 90's I wasn't all that impressed.

And yes, the The Chronic and The Score are much better all around albums than Illmatic IMO.

that's besides the point of this review. we're not here chatting about the most groudbreaking album. we're here chatting about the 'best' hip hop albums. and quite frankly.....neither of those two compare to the sheer brilliance of illmatic. the fact that you haven't even reviewed illmatic, tells its own story...stop hating on nas, ok?

jeez, you even have the chronic and the score on your list. both of which are the most overrated pieces of crap, i've ever listened to.

Re: ... (Reply to this comment)

Yes they are. Both exhibited ground breaking new sounds which have become STANDARD in Hip-Hop nowadays, whereas Illmatic stayed off of most heads radar until a decade later. It was a very good album, but it didn't change the direction of Hip-Hop music like those two ATCQ albums did.

And if I had a nickel for every Nas groupie who told me they were down since the first single/video/whatever and didn't just jump on the bandwagon with Stillmatic, I could retire TWICE.

are you trying to tell me MM and LET are better than illmatic? wtf were you smoking when you wrote this?

i have both atcq albums and neither compare to lyrical onslaught that is illmatic.

and btw, i've been a nas fan since i first saw the it ain't hard to tell video.

Before Stillmatic dropped, half of the people on Nas' nut sack now didn't know who he was. Illmatic was good, but overall I feel what I have here is much better.

just readin over the albums again...pretty good list, although I think Death Certificate is better than Amerikkkas Most.....I'm not real sure on my top 10 albums....I'd probably say (not neccesarily in this order)

1. Atliens
2. Illmatic
3. Follow The Leader
4. Death Certificate
5. Ressurection
6. Blackstar
7. 36 Chambers
8. Liquid Swords
9. Reasonable Doubt
10. Capital Punishment

I know my list isn't considered perfect by many, but it's just my opinion

THANK GOD I'm not the only one who thinks Illmatic isn't that great.

Just like to say that i have all the albums on that list (except for Ressurection), and pretty much agree with it 80%, even though I still think Slim Shady LP should be on there. Nice list though, I know I can trust you dude!!

FYI, my top 3 currently:

1- Stankonia
2- Enter the Wu-Tang 36 Chambers
3- Fugees - The Score

""10.)SUPREME CLIENTELE- GHOSTFACE KILLAH
9). STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON- N.W.A.
8). CAPITOL PUNISHMENT- BIG PUNISHER
7). MARSHALL MATHERS L.P- EMINEM
6). THE CHRONIC- DR.DRE
5).ILLMATIC- NAS
4).ALL EYES ON ME- 2-PAC
3).READY TO DIE- NOTRIOUS B.I.G.
2). 7 DAY THEORY:THE DON KULUMINATI-MAKAVELI
1). LIFE AFTER DEATH- BIGGIE SMALLS"""

Supreme Clientele is like the Wu's 5th best album. How can you put it ahead of 36 chambers? Capital Punishment Marshall Mathers LP at no 9 & 7 all time? They were all good albums, no doubt but they werent classic, let alone top 10 all-time. All Eyez On Me at no 4? maybe at no 400, the lyrics are seriously lacking. 85% filler. Most overrated album all-time. The 7 day theory is an improvement, but nowhere NEAR the second best album ever. and how predictable to close with 4 biggie and 2pac albums. me against the world is much better than any pac albums on your list, and why you would think an album that features puffy & lil kim so much is the best album ever is beyond me.

Not in the top ten obviously. I swear, if Stillmatic wasn't such a huge hit, half of the people currently riding Illmatic's nutsack wouldn't even know it existed.
