Please epinions, pay your employees...Jan 17 '02 Write an essay on this topic.

The Bottom Line I'm asking epinions to drop the minimum payout to those outside the US from $100 to $50 or less.
Alright, so I might not be the most active personality on Epinions.com, but I've written some reviews that have gone over pretty well. Anyway, here’s my beef: I live in Canada, and when I joined epinions I didn't realize how impossible it would be to receive any money for the reviews I add to this website. You see, since I do not live inside the United States, the typical $10 minimum for cutting a cheque is multiplied 10 fold to $100! That means I basically cannot checkout whenever I want unless I want to lose the money I currently have in my account. Just as a reference point, I've been with epinions for over a year and a half, and have written a decent number of reviews. However, I only have about $65 in my account, and therefore cannot "cash out" and receive my hard-earned money. Okay, I will admit that writing reviews here isn't all about the money (as we have noted from the countless cuts epinions has been making lately), but it is still an added incentive to keep people writing. However, I very rarely can think of anything to write about, and therefore my money sits in the big old pocket of the epinions crew while I’m stuck making nickels and dimes trying to get the money that rightfully belongs to me. I appreciate the fact that epinions will not cut cheques for $0.34 or anything like that, but I still think that asking me to raise $100 US before even letting me see the money I’ve worked for is a little much. If epinions could consider dropping this amount to around $50, I’m sure it will make a lot of people happy. Maybe this is too much to ask though, maybe epinions appreciates making it difficult for people outside of the US to get their hands on the money that they’ve worked for. I personally know of a few people that have written a number of reviews and then have given up, leaving epinions with their money as well as their eloquently written reviews. Please epinions, have a heart, pay the good people what they deserve and when they deserve it. People should not have to spend a good portion of their life writing reviews about toothbrushes, movies, and other little things in order to scrape together the change for their $100. When I originally joined, I actually thought that it wouldn’t take all that long to raise the money. When I was first a member, epinions was paying out $0.03/member view, and income share seemed to be a bit higher as well. If I would have known that epinions was going to cheap out and eventually cut out “Base Eroyalties” altogether, then I would have done a lot more work back then instead of busting my butt writing reviews and being thankful to receive my $0.40/month for it. Honestly epinions, I really think that with all you have done in 2001 to hurt the poor little reviewers, you should at least give them the chance to obtain the money that have worked so hard for. I don't know why epinions does not like to pay those who live outside the US, but obviously, they are doing as much as they can to avoid it. I’ve been working for epinions for over a year and a half for free now. I wish they would just do the right thing and pay its employees, because that’s exactly what we are. Thank you for your time. -Dereck G. |
