The Bottom Line A nice place to visit, but a rough place to write.
By way of thanks to those (precious few!) of my faithful readers, I'd thought I's say a word about my decision to stop submitting regular reviews. I've enjoyed Epinions tremendously over the past couple years... it's quite addicting, and a creative concept.
It's fun to write and read reviews, and have my opinions read by others, and it's been a good place keep my writing pencil sharp! But I also believe that good writing and thorough reviewing deserve fair compensation if posted on a for-profit site. So it's a little frustrating that writing is not compensated half decently here on Epinions. And now that I'm working in the ebeauty industry, there are some bothersome conflict-of-interest issues with writing cosmetic reviews.
All along, I just haven't been interested in spending vast amounts of time and energy "working the system," and that seems to be necessary if one wants to avoid donating articles for a few pennies each. Call me crazy, but I'm interested in writing/reviewing, not keeping abreast of the changes at Epinions, or trying to figure out which strategies will get me the most "hits." And Epinions, despite it's many charms, seems to rewards savvy self-promoters rather than "mere" good reviewers.
I'll always have a soft spot for Epinions, and I hope it sticks around. To those of you here who have enchanted me with writing that goes delightfully far and above the call of product-review duty, keep writing! And please consider that your fine writing/reviewing is a skill and an art, and also a commodity that businesses can and should compensate you properly for.
I still plan to pop in once in a blue moon, when I have a burning desire to review something wonderful or atrocious.
